    30 YEARS AGO, early bird taxpayers in Elizabethtown received an increased discount following action by city council. The council voted to increase the early payment discount on the city property tax from 2 percent to 6 percent.

    20 YEARS AGO, the Sons of Confederate Veterans held a memorial at the Helm Cemetery in Elizabethtown for Brig. Gen. Ben Hardin Helm, a Hardin County native who died at the Battle of Chickamauga, Ga. He was leading Kentucky’s famous Orphan Brigade at the time of his death.

    30 YEARS AGO, the state Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection were to determine whether or not to revoke Orkin’s license to practice pest control in the state after several treatments administered were found to be unnecessary.

    20 YEARS AGO, Tony Simpson, hauling wood to made extra money during his vacation, was killed when the tractor he was driving overturned as it headed down a steep hill.

    30 YEARS AGO, An Upton family was okay after a gas explosion blew their house off its foundation, broke windows and overturned furniture.

    20 YEARS AGO, to avoid late afternoon heat, the Hardin County School System announced plans to begin school one hour earlier than normal.

    10 YEARS AGO, the Hardin Fiscal Court agreed to donate $200,000 for a proposed Coke mu-seum, only a fraction of the $1 million organizers requested.

    30 YEARS AGO, Elizabethtown enjoyed a big construction month in July with over $3 million worth of buildings constructed, according to city building records.

    20 YEARS AGO, an Elizabethtown woman and her teen-age children tried to persuade city officials to approve later weekend hours for Freeman Lake Park, allowing teens to congregate socially.

    10 YEARS AGO, a six-month study by Hardin Memorial Hospital showed that women wanted more female OB/GYNs and that the area lacked primary care physicians.
