Start new year with smoke detectors

Several years ago, the Rineyville Fire Department responded to a structure fire that claimed two lives. After the investigation, it was determined that the occupants  did not have a working smoke detector properly placed in the residence.

The investigation found the occupants succumbed to smoke, as a result of the fire, while trying to escape.

    50 cents buys ill feelings

On Dec. 23, I drove from Tennessee to Vine Grove to spend Christmas with my family. I got into Elizabethtown and spotted a chain restaurant. It sounded good. I loved their store in Radcliff when I lived there.

So I stopped, used the restroom and went to place an order. My appetite is not good, so I ordered a child’s meal. I started counting out my change and found I was 50 cents short from having enough money. I was sure I had enough to pay, but I did not.

    President deserves latest recognition

As we start our first full year of Obamacare, let’s take a moment to give the Campaigner-in-Chief recognition for his latest award. Unlike the Nobel Peace Prize, this is an award which he has worked hard to get and truly deserves.

So congratulations to Barack Hussein Obama, you are the winner of the 2013 politifact.com Lie of the Year Award.

School safety drills are sign of societal failure to act

Lock down drills. Why as parents and grandparents are we accepting this? Have we convinced ourselves there is nothing we can do about our children not being safe in school?

    Understand basis for Phil’s beliefs

If you know who Phil Robertson is, then you know enough to read this letter. If you don’t know, then you can stop reading here. Phil Robertson, from all I have read, is a religious person whose beliefs are deeply rooted in his reading of the Bible.

Dr. Vo case was lot spent for little value

On Friday, Dec. 15, 2013, The News-Enterprise reported the settlement of the case of Dr. Canh Jeff Vo, owner of the Bluegrass Women’s Healthcare, for crimes of importing and using non-Food and Drug Administration-approved forms of birth control. He was charged with 13 counts by a federal grand jury indictment of health care fraud, mail fraud, misbranding medical devices and smuggling non-FDA approved devices. He faced as many as 200 years in prison and a fine of as much $3 million.

    Opposing next 2,000-page bill

Speaker of the House John Boehner has signaled he will take up comprehensive immigration reform in the new year. The Senate earlier this year passed a 2,000-page amnesty bill that fails to secure the border.

Speaker Boehner would be wise to focus on the issues that concern Americans — such as repealing Obamacare. Instead, he seems beholden to special interest groups that are desperate for an amnesty bill that will provide cheaper labor.

Eminent domain used as a threat

I have been told that Williams Co.’s pipeline is good for the community, that it will inject needed jobs and money into our economy. This pipeline is not about the greater good. It is a business to make a profit, no different from building a shopping center. The Williams Co.’s gifts will be short-lived.

This pipeline carrying a high pressure and explosive mixture will be like burying a dragon that will be with us for generations.

    Obama gang immune to facts

I finally have come to the realization that no matter what people like me say or print, nothing gets done. I am referring to numerous letters sent to the newspaper presenting the truths about Mr. Obama and his gang of cutthroats. They make the pirates of hundreds of years ago look like angels.
