    Losing is not an option

Have you heard the quote “Winning isn’t everything?” To sports players, it’s right. It’s not all about the score. But for people fighting cancer, losing is not an option.

According to Kentucky Cancer Registry, 4,314,113 of Kentucky’s 4,369,356 residents are at risk of getting cancer. Almost 10,000 of us died in 2009 because of it.

    Teacher Appreciation Week

Despite the rain last Saturday, there were lots of people to cheer as the horses came down the sloppy Churchill Downs stretch.

    Recognizing public service

Across the country and in communities like Radcliff, Elizabethtown and our surrounding communities, government employees protect and serve our nation every day. To honor these workers and their service, May 5-11 has been designated as National Public Service Recognition Week.

I want to personally express my support for the thousands of National Active and Retired Federal Employees in Kentucky and across our Nation. Won’t you join me?

    Medical movement

Hardin County Judge-Executive Harry Berry insinuated in his letter that I own land where a proposed county government building might be constructed. I would like to assure the judge I do not own a square inch of property downtown. My main concern is not moving county offices from downtown but rather with Hardin Memorial Hospital, which I spent a lifetime helping to build.

    HMH a treasure

I would like to make a special comment about Hardin Memorial Hospital.

I was admitted to the hospital for different surgeries. I received outstanding service from the staff to the surgeon for my excellent care and recovery.

It is comforting to have such a good service provider at HMH.

The following are excerpts of essays written by area teens for a class project.

    Teen hangout?

It’s 5 p.m., you just got off work. What’s your child doing? Either playing Xbox or texting. And you know neither one of them is good for them. Well, what if there was a way to get them off the Xbox and cellphone and still have some fun while staying out of trouble? There is a way but we currently do not have the solution. But, I know a solution. We need a hangout for teens to have fun and stay out of trouble. Doesn’t that sound nice?
