    A festival well done

This past White Mills Days saw a lot of reasons for our community to celebrate the spirit of a community even as the weather threatened to wash away our festival. It was a comman site to see men and women bringing in hundreds of pies and cakes carefully protecting them from the elements.

    Celebrities at the sports park?
That is what you would have thought with all the cameras clicking. The Floresville Big Dawgs from Texas made us older folks feel like celebrities.

We had driven 1.3 miles to support the team, once in pool play and on tournament day. My husband, John Walker, grew up only 26 miles from Floresville, having played football for Pleasanton High School against Floresville back in the dark ages (1951-1953).

    Keep the road clean

I viewed a picture on page A2 in Thursday’s The News-Enterprise that runs shivers up my spine.

As a rider of a motorcycle nothing is more shocking than to round a corner and see freshly cut grass on the roadway. Many times there is no place to go because of oncoming traffic. I quickly pray and slow down as safely as possible. Feeling the tires slide on slick grass is not a fond feeling.

    Respectful policy for veterans

Recently, I was asked my opinion on what I thought about the passing of Senate Bill 150.

If you are not familiar, it’s a bill in which a veteran who can show that he or she, in the course of their military service, has taken sufficient firearms training course is eligible to apply for a concealed deadly weapons license without taking a course through a state-certified instructor. Background checks still will be done just like any citizen and all concealed carry deadly weapon laws still would apply.

    Upholding oaths

“I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter: So help me God.”

    Watch where you drive

Molly was our 2-year-old Australian Shepherd. We got her from a little girl giving puppies away in front of Wal-Mart. Despite being a mixed breed, Molly was 100 percent pure dog that never met a stranger. She wagged her tail so much we often called her “Wiggly Butt” instead of Molly.

What are they doing in Washington?

Our federal representatives are supposed to be aware of issues in our communities and advocate for us in Washington, D.C.

So when it was announced last week that Fort Knox would be losing the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division – taking with it thousands of jobs – why were our elected representatives caught off guard? They “hope” other military units will come in the future, but hope is not a plan of action.

    Weather warnings

Hot weather is upon us and with the rise in temperature comes much suffering for animals.
