What will happen to the post office?

I do not understand why more is not being reported on the attack the United States Postal Service is under from Congress.

To start, the 2006 Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act mandates the postal service to fully fund the cost of retiree health and pension benefits for the next 75 years.

    Keep offices on the square

It only makes sense to me that the best and least expensive way to bring people and business into downtown Elizabethtown would be to keep all government offices on the square.

With the recent vote against allowing bars and alcohol by the drink, I see very little likelihood of businesses being able to succeed there. If all government offices were located there, we would be able to save all of the money allotted for downtown revitalization ideas that probably won't work anyway.

    Hagel a strong choice

Chuck Hagel was finally confirmed as President Barack Obama’s Secretary of Defense, as he should have been since Obama won the election — decisively.

White House truth in short supply

Please explain this to me: Senior Homeland Security officer Gary Mead, the man whose job is arresting and deporting illegal immigrants, has suddenly decided to retire in April.

Basketball hero gone but not forgotten

On the news there was a segment regarding a high school boy throwing a game-winning shot from the other end of court — very exciting.

It brought back memories of a 1949 basketball game at Howevalley High School.

Paul Woodring — from Cecilia family of forever — was a senior. He made the same shot and with the same results — we won the game. Our small gym also erupted.

I was a sophomore and a cheerleader and have never forgotten that night.

    On Senate Bill 9

There may be some of us who may or may not require the need for a nursing facility. Yet, I know most of us know someone who has had a need for one. As a former district long term care ombudsman I have seen the good and the bad.

Fear should not stop local birthing center

I am overjoyed for the proposed birth center in Elizabethtown but dismayed to hear about the fear that might prevent its opening.

    President’s leadership lacks

The president has been in the media about every day recently making statements of how bad things are going to be because of the coming sequestration. When one looks into it, he was the one who proposed sequestration, even though he said he didn’t before the election. Now he would like to prevent his own proposed legislation from automatically taking effect March 1. How embarrassing for him.
