Farmers should be troubled by policies
Anyone who is a farmer, knows a farmer or supports farming never should consider voting for Matt Bevin, because he has made it clear, most recently at Fancy Farm picnic, he is Donald Trump’s man and supports everything the president has done in office.
What President Trump has done for the farmer is to start a trade war with China he now says he will escalate in September with even more tariffs on Chinese imports. Quite logically, China has responded with tariffs of its own on American goods.
The $16 billion subsidy authorized to offset the effect of the tariffs is a fair and terrifying indicator of what kind of damage the tariffs are doing to agricultural industry. Soybean sales to China are off 80 percent. China now is buying its soybeans from Brazil and Argentina and, according to Bloomberg News, has asked state-owned companies to suspend all U.S. agricultural imports.
Assuming the president and Congress are not planning on allocating billions of dollars in perpetuity, the problems farmers are facing today will be compounded in the future.
And problems abound.
Kentucky Soybean Association estimates the tariffs cost Kentucky farmers $200 million in 2018. This is not accounting for the losses of corn farmers and hog producers.
By way of comparison, the Center for Agriculture and Rural Development at Iowa State University estimated the loss to all Iowa farmers and related agricultural businesses to be between $1 and $2 billion.
To add insult to injury, the 25 percent tariff on agricultural equipment and raw material, such as steel and aluminum, Trump levied, has resulted in higher prices on equipment and parts farmers must have to grow their crops. In summary, the money they can make is down, while the price of doing business is up and going higher. Farmers truly are “in the cross hairs of the trade war.” And anyone who would support doing this to our farmers does not deserve our vote.
Andy Beshear knows about farming and cares about farmers. When he is governor, the farmers and all of the Commonwealth will have a friend and ally in Frankfort.

It’s time for America to wake up to reality
I recently read two items which made me want to shout, “Wake Up, America.”
One was a 2003 Washington Times commentary by Dennis Prager: “Three global ideologies compete for humanity’s future.” Here are two segments.
“There are now three ideologies competing to shape the future of mankind. They are militant Islam, Western European secularism and socialism and American Judeo-Christianity and capitalism. The first is being spread both peacefully and violently, the second is being spread peacefully and the third is not being spread.”
“The American way can only prevail if Americans believe in it. But with America’s universities, unions, professional associations, major news media and one of its two major parties ideologically aligned with Europe, and with big business undermining Judeo-Christian values, the battle within America itself for America’s unique values is far from won.”
Written more than 16 years ago, it is very much the case today.
The second was a book, “MiG Pilot” by John Barron, which tells of a Soviet pilot who intentionally flew the USSR’s top secret jet, the MiG 25, to Japan on Sept. 6, 1975, so the U.S. would have access to secrets the Soviets had at the time. It was a story of his struggle and swallowing of his pride to become “a good Communist” in order to become a pilot. Eventually, he decided freedom was what he needed more than anything.
A wonderful book, it impressed upon me again how great America is.
We have a great country but our elected officials are not doing their jobs because of politics.
I am disturbed by the “Communist/Socialist Squad” in Congress who obviously hate our capitalist system and I am deeply upset by a lack of cooperation to do what is best regarding our health and safety.
Some folks will hate President Donald Trump forever. I do not. He is flawed in some ways but he has been great for America overall. I encourage all Americans to be informed voters and support those who love America and will support her in every respect.
The Democratic candidates for preisdent remind me of those in the famous old English insane asylum of Bedlam.
Wake up, America, and God bless America.
