    Remember now, we’re talking actual greeting cards filled out at your kitchen table then physically moved many thousands of miles by real people for 44 cents a piece.

    How on earth can the United States Postal Service make a profit on this transaction?

    OUR VIEW: Still room for improvement

    Like a parent to a child on the academic journey, we say to our local school districts regarding recently released data on ACT scores: You are doing quite well, but let’s continue to strive to do better in the future.

    Certainly all schools in the area could improve on results released earlier this month for juniors, who are mandated to take the test as part of the state’s annual assessments, as well as 2011 graduates who elect to take the test.

    Skeptical and proud
    With the 10th anniversary of the terrible tragedy in New York City approaching, let us remember all the lives that were lost that day and weeks and years following. Pray for the people who are sick and injured from it and for families and friends of people who perished.
    I heard a CNN report that the first responders to 9/11 are not invited to attend (the anniversary ceremonies). I don’t fully understand that, but keep those men and women in your prayers also.

    There’s been a lot of breast-beating lately about Hardin County’s place in the world. We’re tops in income growth and in the top 10 on a number of other lists for quality of life issues, safety and more. There’s a lot to be proud of.

    But there are lists where Hardin County does not rank near the top. In fact, it consistently falls in the bottom 10. Those lists are statistical comparisons of public libraries in Kentucky.

  • What's in a name? It's a topic that might not matter

    One thing that advocates, opponents and the indifferent can agree upon: The topic of local government unification has produced plenty of conversation. Most of which start with questions.

    How would it work? Who will benefit? What about the restaurant tax? Will it impact alcohol sales? Will it save money? Will it be more efficient? Who raised this idea in the first place? Do we need a merger? Why? Why not?
