    Facilities continue to serve community

For generations, University Drive Park has been a home away from home each summer for families of Elizabethtown and neighboring communities.

Night after night, the skies were illuminated by lights from baseball games or countless tennis matches.

The playgrounds have provided opportunities to climb and jump and swing or simply to celebrate the energy of youth.

This particular emergency room is all too familiar to me: I know the room numbers and their location almost by memory, having been called upon to pray here more times than I care to recall.

But every situation is a bit different; this one caught me by the throat.

Parrett praised for focusing on merit

State Sen. Dennis Parrett is to be commended for his approach of voting on a bill based on its merits, not party lines. Now if more politicians would do likewise we may see some progress in government.

About 45 years ago, U.S. Sen. John Sherman Cooper of Kentucky took this approach and set an example which many others followed.

Kudos: Praising positives in the community

There seems no shortage of Hardin Countians who rule their kitchens. And at Christmastime, many are eager to donate their talent to brighten others’ holidays.

One of the most dazzling displays of charity cooking is the auction that raises money for Vine Grove’s Christmas for the Kids program. Homemade cakes were auctioned at the event, some for big money. Alta Hargan’s Italian creme cake, for example, went for $1,400.

    The auction raised $11,500.

    OUR VIEW:A well-deserving person, indeed

The most impactful servants are often those who selflessly seek to help others without a desire for public recognition and acknowledgement. The blessing of seeing another’s need met is credit enough for them. Even so, it’s still nice to have ones’ efforts acknowledged.

For one humble local servant, this deserving acknowledgement came all the way from the Vatican.
