  • Youth Theatre at 40: Bravo and encore

You are only as old as you feel and Youth Theatre of Hardin County hasn’t lost the spring in its step as it celebrates its 40th anniversary this year.

Hardin County has been the fortunate recipient of 40 seasons of quality live entertainment. From its first production of “The Mouse that Roared” in 1972 to its most recent production, last weekend’s “White Christmas,” students have grown up on the stage one performance at a time.

    Praise-worthy series
The News Enterprise recently took the rather unusual liberty of recognizing its own series about local military heroes in a formal editorial. It was completely justified in doing so.

  • Hiring staff is one part of Sports Park project

    The topic: Sports Park director
Our view: All eyes on the park
The Elizabethtown Sports Park is on a fast track toward its unveiling next year at this time.
Dirt has been turned, bids have been accepted and the facility is starting to take shape.
And, management has been put in place. The latest hire is Seth Breitner as director of  the state-of-the-art, multi-sports complex.
The park already has a turf specialist. Sufficient management will be in place to make the park look like a sports destination.

As we get closer to Election Day for statewide races in Kentucky, differences between the candidates become clearer. On July 14, GOP candidate for secretary of state Bill Johnson filed an ethics complaint against Secretary of State Elaine Walker, who wants to open voter registration rolls to those who have no address.

    Supporting Shaw
We are fortunate to have Commonwealth’s Attorney Chris Shaw. He can only present what evidence he has. He is a good and decent attorney. I am proud to live in Hardin County and he is part of the reason why. I wish the U.S. Army good luck.

  • Hardin's reapportionment goes quickly, smoothly

    The issue: Legislative districts
Our view: Hardin County got it right

Legislative boundaries are redrawn every 10 years to reflect population shifts detected by the latest U.S. Census. The constitutional requirement assures balanced representation.

It also creates periodic political infighting because some districts are enlarged and others shrink to obtain a balanced number of constituents. It should be noted, however, that Hardin County completed the process in record time without any public bickering.

    Recheck the math
Let’s travel back in time to the summer of the year 2000. Gas prices were at a low of 99.9 cents per gallon and averaged $1.27 at the end of December. The national debt was being paid down. We weren’t at war, the economy was stable, Medicare and Social Security weren’t being threatened with cuts, there was no bank crisis, America had a year end surplus in the national budget and the unemployment level was acceptable.

    Our view: Providing needed service

The United States has been at war nearly a decade and as deployments continue, another battle is brewing.

    It’s a fight for marriage.
