    Much of Tom Arflin’s life has been spent on the fields of play in Radcliff as a leading and passionate advocate for youth football and baseball in the city.

    His recent afternoon of recognition was not only appropriate, but long overdue. The man has been the backbone of the North Hardin Youth Football League for years.

  • Army at 236: Healthy, ever changing force

    America's fighting force celebrates its 236th birthday today. In fact, the U.S. Army is older than the U.S. government, having been established by the Continental Congress more than a year before adopting the Declaration of Independence.

    Today also is Flag Day when the world's most recognizable symbol of freedom is celebrated.

    That seems an appropriate mix since the men and women of the Army and all branches of the U.S. fighting forces put their hearts and souls on the line to defend freedom and protect the flag.

    What are we doing?
    Why does the president have the U.S. involved in what appears to be a civil war in Libya? Who are the people we are supporting? What does our country know about them? Why is it advantageous for our country to support them? Was/is Libya a threat to the U.S.?  Why is the president opposing calling it a “war?” Who believes the president when he says “No boots on the ground?” Does this action make us appear to be terrorists? Are we making Muslim enemies for generations?

    Each brought council experience to the new job, but it’s not the same as sitting in the big chair. Especially not during budget season.

  • Heartland again provides high-energy, fun weekend

    The 2011 Heartland Music Festival was a success for our community. Even with changes to the date and name and reworking the venue, it was a success.
    Hats off to the festival committee for doing an outstanding job in anticipating potential hurdles and handling issues in advance.
    Or as Hardin County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Brad Richardson said at Monday’s meeting of the Elizabethtown City Council: “Everybody did their job and more. It was great.”

    From one soldier to another
    You may have seen an article in the paper or heard from a friend about the Casing of the Colors Ceremony for the U.S. Army Armor School, or you may be thinking, “Didn’t that already happen?” Well no, it has not. But it will Friday, June 10, at 9 a.m. at Brooks Field on Fort Knox. Through 70 years more than 300,000 soldiers and Marines learned the skills to become tankers, scouts, or mechanics and many of us chose to retire here in the area.

    OUR VIEW: Baseball, softball teams have been dominant

    School is out for Central Hardin High School, but that is not stopping the baseball and softball programs at the school from representing their school, county and region at its highest level in Kentucky.

    Both teams are playing in the State Tournament.
