    Hooray for ‘Hooray for Heroes’
    Saturday evening my daughter, three grandchildren and I attended the Hooray for Heroes program at Stithton Baptist Church. It was absolutely fantastic. I was filled with pride for the recognition of my 30 years of active Army service and 15 years as a first responder and for the service of my brother and sister veterans. Likewise, I was proud of the recognition of the brand new soldiers in the making who filled the pews.

  • Rapture: Cashing in on the Apocalypse

    Oops. He missed it again —- the date for the rapture, that is. But that’s OK, miscalculating the date for the end times is nothing new for Harold Camping.

    In 1992, he published his book, “1994?” in which he predicted Sept. 6, 1994 as the beginning of the end. Undeterred by that non-happening, Camping did some re-calculating and published another book in 2008, “We Are Almost There!” He conveniently forgot to mention his 1994 prediction’s failure to launch.

    Bravo, State Theater
    I want to say “Hats Off” to Emily West and the State Theater. I went to the Mark Chesnutt concert this past weekend and cannot say enough how much I enjoyed the show (and this coming from a person who is not a country music fan). The show had the caliber of entertainment one would find in Louisville or Nashville. The venue was great and there wasn’t a bad seat in the house.

    Addressing an address problem
    I would like to voice my opinion about my mail route. I lived in Summit, which had a post office. Then, a few years ago, Summit post office closed and now my mail goes to Eastview post office route 1. The story I have heard is that they won’t close the Eastview post office but will change my address to Big Clifty in Grayson County.
    What if I need a fire department or some other help and I tell them my address is Big Clifty? Where do you think they would go? Big Clifty, of course, and I live in Summit.

    Graduates, remember alcohol education
    I have been a DARE officer for nearly eight years with the Hardin County Sheriff’s office. This year, my very first fifth grade class is graduating from high school. I am so proud. Kids from Lakewood, Rineyville, Upton, Sonora and Lincoln Trail elementary schools are taking that big step toward adulthood. I’m writing to remind each of you to remember the things that I, your teachers and parents have taught you about the dangers of drugs and alcohol.
