  • Weather watchers watch over us

    I used to wonder why my wife, Lori, and her family are such avid weather watchers. Whenever we are in a storm warning in Kentucky, my mother-in-law in Oklahoma usually knows about it before I do.

    Not long ago she called me on my cell phone: “Are you OK?”

    I had no clue why she asked. I quickly glanced around my office for vandals, felt my pulse and answered, “I guess so. Why?”

    Railways to heaven
    April 30 marked the 40th anniversary of the end of an era; the last running of passenger trains on the L&N Railroad, one of the great classy American Railroads. On that date, several L&N routes ran their last trip. The most notable of these, The Pan American and The Hummingbird, service from Cincinnati to New Orleans. The few trains that remained were continued under Amtrak for different periods of time. Most were canceled before 1980.

    Alcohol sales should be put to a vote
    The issue is not a moral one but rather a matter of allowing voters to decide if they want alcoholic beverages sold at retailers in the county. The first amendment gives us the right to petition and that is exactly what Y.E.S. is doing. They are gathering signatures on a petition so the question can be put to a vote. No matter if you are for or against the issue, voters in Hardin County have the right to decide.

    Four Alabama refugees and their dog took shelter in our house early Thursday morning. My daughter’s family escaped without injury or significant property damage but not without some degree of impact.

    After our daily April storms, the constant storm watches and warnings almost became background noise. Another threat was predicted for Wednesday but when my wife described news of Alabama’s devastation the information didn’t immediately register.

    The family’s decision to close the attraction and auction its treasures has been greeted by a sense of regret by many. A major part of the disappointment is a form of guilt: We often don’t appreciate what we have until it’s gone.
