    The good, the bad and the yummy
    Recently, Yum! Brands proposed allowing food stamps to be accepted at restaurants owned by Yum! corporations. Lobbyists are rallying for Gov. Steve Beshear’s support. Yum! has financially endorsed Beshear’s re-election campaign on many occasions since the food stamp/restaurant proposal, almost assuredly in hopes of gaining his support.

  • Hoping to renew the memory of sacrifice

    He’s been gone almost four years: On one hand, not such a long time. But considering he died at age 19, it equates to a big chunk of the life he lived.

    Sammie Phillips died a long way from home. The North Hardin High School graduate was killed in Rustamlyah, Iraq, on Sept. 10, 2007 – 43 months ago today. While in the service of his country as a member of the Kentucky National Guard, Pfc. Phillips’ vehicle overturned on a traffic control mission.

    His family and friends remember his sacrifice.

  • Capitol ideas

    Back in February, which was Black History Month, Kentucky Speaker of the House Greg Stumbo suggested that a statue of Muhammad Ali would be a good addition to Capitol Rotunda.

    The Kentuckians already honored there are President Abraham Lincoln; Jefferson Davis, president of the Confederacy; Vice President Alban Barkley, statesman Henry Clay and Ephraim McDowell, a pioneering surgeon.

    Coal good for America
    Approaching Easter, I think of the commercial about a product that is only available during this time of year. It essentially says “when the Easter Bunny is gone, this product is also gone.” Something like government incentives and tax breaks for the development of alternative energy sources. For when the incentives are gone, so are the new energy projects.
    This has been proven in Europe, according to a recent John Stossel report, and it is subject to happen here, too.
