KUDOS: Praising positives in our community

AGAINST THE ODDS. Perfect school attendance is a goal some students set for themselves at the outset of a new school year. But not all achieve this worthwhile and ambitious objective. Illness, accident or other challenges that cannot be overcome often stand in the way.

These obstacles were no match, however, for two recent local high school graduates. With uncommon persistence and determination, they found ways to beat the odds and never missed a day of class. Not one day, ever.

    Wondering about JCPS findings

I read with great interest the article in the May 22 issue of The News-Enterprise pertaining to the audit of Jefferson County Public Schools by the state auditor. Based on that article and compared to five other school districts, the auditors found JCPS ranked highest in school administration staff, support staff and instructional aides while ranking at or near the bottom in spending for instruction and teach staffing.

    ISSUE: Kentucky’s 50 Safest Cities
    OUR VIEW:
    There’s no place like home

The recognition likely comes as little surprise to residents who live in four neighboring cities within our region, but it is great recognition nonetheless.

  • BBB: Don't put your faith in a bogus job offer

Looking for a summer job? You could be the target of scammers handing out fake job offers.

These bogus sites originate on some popular website, job posting sites and even direct messages via email and phone calls. Accepting these offers or contacting the phony employers can lead to stolen personal information or money.

    President’s actions threaten democracy

Saturday is Flag Day and I am very proud of the flag of the United States and for what it has stood for so many years. However, like so many Americans today, I am afraid the flag that has flown over the land of the free and the home of the brave is in dire jeopardy because of the flawed actions of President Barack Obama.

  • Rocket docket is flying high

    ISSUE: Reintroduction of rocket docket
OUR VIEW: Thanks to prosecutors for making it work

One year after it was reintroduced by local prosecutors, the rocket docket seems to again be accomplishing its goals.

A program that speeds adjudications for defendants pleading guilty to non-violent, non-sex offense felonies, rocket docket saves time and money.
