ADE is an abbreviation for Alcohol Driver Education, BAC is the Blood Alcohol Concentration reading, KAPS stands for Kentucky Alternative Programs, EIP stands for Early Intervention Program and VIP stands for Victims Impact Panel. LEXINGTON— The Central Hardin Bruins have built a dynasty in the 5th Region, winning four consecutive championships and five of the last six.

The Bruins have not only become a powerhouse within the region, but statewide. In four their last four trips to the state tournament, they have won the championship in 2011 and were in the semifinals this year. They also were ranked No. 1 for extended portion of this season.

Drew Harrington can now call himself a two-time first-team All-State honoree.

The Central Hardin senior southpaw was selected to the Kentucky High School Baseball Coaches’ Association first-team All-State for the second straight year Thursday.

The University of Louisville-bound Harrington went 10-1 with a 0.26 ERA for the Bruins, who finished 34-6 and lost to eventual state champion Louisville Pleasure Ridge Park in the Forcht Bank/KHSAA State Baseball Tournament semifinals last weekend.

American Red Cross to host blood...

American Red Cross kicks off its summer season by serving the needs of the community this week.

The Elizabethtown American Red Cross hosts the Celebrate Summer Celebrate Life blood drive from noon to 7 p.m. Friday at Pritchard Community Center. The event is the largest blood drive of the year for the Red Cross site.

GIRLS' PREP BASKETBALL:...

All four area teams which competed in the annual Duke’s Summer Shootout girls’ prep basketball exhibition games left pleased as the event wrapped up Wednesday night.

The Shootout began Monday morning with action in three gyms – Charlie Rawlings Memorial Gymnasium, the auxiliary gym and nearby Panther Academy. The event featured 12 consecutive hours of games Monday and Tuesday and 11 hours of play Wednesday.

PREP BASEBALL:: Bruins happy to...

Central Hardin senior Troy Squires watched nervously from the dugout Tuesday night at Whitaker Bank Ballpark, not knowing if he had played his final high school game.

But the Bruins scored two runs in the top of the third and held on for a 2-0 over the Lone Oak Purple Flash in the Forcht Bank/KHSAA State Baseball Tournament.

Squires was ejected in the 5th Region Baseball Tournament semifinals and had to serve a two-game mandatory suspension.

TIM WALKER: Mayor was a friend...

Mike Pyles remembers the phone call from Elizabethtown Mayor Tim Walker.

It was July 30, a day after the grueling Cal Ripken Ohio Valley Regional tournaments – which Pyles served as tournament director – finished at the Elizabethtown Sports Park.

It was the first tournament to be held at the then-brand new Sports Park and Walker wanted to thank Pyles, the Elizabethtown Area Baseball Commission and a corps of volunteers for their efforts.

Double standard

We all heard about the horrible tragedy in Newtown, Conn. Twenty precious first graders and six of their teachers and leaders lost their lives at the hands of a mad man with a gun.

I am the mother of three wonderful grown children. My heart still goes out to those families. I cannot imagine losing a child. Parents are not supposed to have to bury their children.

James Webb knows a state champion when he sees one.

The longtime North Hardin track coach was unwavering in his belief sophomore Kianna Gray had the potential to be a multiple-time state champ – and one of the best to compete at North Hardin – by the time her high school career was over.

It just took a little while for Gray to have that same belief in herself.

AREA NOTEBOOK: Swope Nissan...

The eighth annual high school football bowl games at North Hardin High School’s Ray Story Stadium have new teams and a new sponsor.

The Swope Nissan Joe Jaggers Classic is set for Aug. 31, the second Saturday of the regular season.

The host Trojans will take on the Louisville Doss Dragons in the opener at 5:30 p.m., while the Meade County Green Wave will face the Louisville Western Warriors in the nightcap at 8:30.

It will be the first appearance for Doss and Western in the bowl.
