PREP SOFTBALL: Already in region...

Over the next two weeks, the Meade County Lady Waves are going to know the easiest route to Hancock County better than even the most sophisticated GPS.

That’s because Meade County is already guaranteed a spot in next week’s 3rd Region Softball Tournament at Hancock County – which is also coincidentally the site of this week’s three-team 11th District Tournament.

LOUISVILLE — Having grown used to watching James Washington come from behind to win a few times before, Jeff McNeil wasn’t surprised when the Elizabethtown junior did it again during Friday night’s Class 2-A KHSAA State Track & Field Championships.

Heading into the last two hurdles in the 110-meter race, Washington was just behind Shelby County senior Michael Barry. But like he has before, Washington found a little something extra to guide him to the gold medal at the University of Louisville’s Owsley Frazier Cardinal Park.

The Meade County Lady Waves are the queens of the 11th District yet again.

Top-seeded Meade County won its third straight district tournament title Tuesday night, topping second-seeded Breckinridge County, 8-0 in Lewisport.

“The girls played really well,” said veteran Meade County coach Mike Harreld. “It was just a great, total team effort. Breck County is a much-improved team. I thought we looked pretty sharp. I still feel like we’ve got to get some bunts down and hit a little bit better, but overall we looked pretty good.”

We’re going to toot our horn a little here and that of many, many others.

The second Select Preps banquet was held at Severns Valley Baptist Church in Elizabethtown, culminating several months of work by newspaper employees, area coaches, athletic directors and student-athletes. Dozens of businesses saw the worthiness of honoring some of our future leaders and served as sport or event sponsors.

OPINION: Central shows its still...

Being favored entering the postseason isn’t always the easiest the position to be in. There’s a certain amount of pressure, not to mention expectations with being the favorite. It doesn’t earn a team an automatic victory. When you think about it, being favored doesn’t guarantee anything.

The Central Hardin baseball and softball teams were heavily favored entering this week’s 17th District tournaments and both emerged with championships. Both left no doubt who the best team in baseball and softball were once again.

Haven’t we all seen or heard such tempting claims about various products. But is it real? You know the pitch. Maybe it’s a fescue or bermudagrass that yields 20 tons per acre. Or a foliar fertilizer that doubles alfalfa production. It could be a soil enhancer that makes water wetter or releases more nutrients from your soil. Or possibly a microbial inoculant that allows you to safely bale or store wet hay.
