HMH bad debt balloons

Hardin Memorial Health officials said they must simplify the application process for patients who cannot afford to pay their bills so they can qualify for assistance.

At the same time, President and CEO Dennis Johnson said the health system will continue to practice “tough love” toward patients who can afford to pay but refuse to do so.

Strategies were discussed Tuesday morning at the monthly Board of Trustees meeting as HMH evaluates an increasingly bleak financial outlook for the fiscal year with only two months remaining.

Delays expected at Ring Road, Ky...

Signal alignment work begins at 9 a.m. today at the intersection of Ring Road and Ky. 251 in Elizabethtown.

The work is expected to last between 30 minutes and an hour, according to a Kentucky Transportation Cabinet news release. Motorists along Ky. 251 will be required to find alternate routes around the intersection while work is underway.

Also on Ky. 251 today, crews will shift signals to accommodate the alignment of the road. Traffic will be reduced to one lane.

Colors casing ceremony next week

The 3rd Infantry Brigade Combat team, 1st Infantry Division is headed back to the front lines.

Fort Knox is hosting a colors casing ceremony for the unit 10 a.m. Tuesday at Brooks Field on post as its members ramp up for another tour of Afghanistan.

Not all of the unit’s roughly 3,500 soldiers will deploy. Sgt. Thomas Duval with the 3/1 Public Affairs Office said the numbers continue to fluctuate but about 2,000 soldiers are expected to leave.

PREP TRACK: North claims both...

The beat goes on for North Hardin.

Both the Trojans and Lady Trojans topped the 200-point mark Thursday night as each extended their reign over Class 3-A, Region 2.

Next stop: the state meet.

The North Hardin boys won seven events and all four relays en route to winning their seventh straight region title with 215 points at Central Hardin’s Bruin Field.

Ekron man pleads guilty to theft...

A Meade County resident charged in a series of thefts from Wal-Mart in Radcliff pleaded guilty Tuesday during an arraignment in Hardin Circuit Court.

Joseph D. Mullins, 29, of Ekron accepted a plea agreement last week through the county’s rocket docket program. On Tuesday, he pleaded guilty to three felony and two misdemeanor counts of shoplifting.

Hooray for Heroes is Saturday

With much of Hardin County turning out to honor soldiers, organizers of Hooray for Heroes have added shuttle service to accommodate crowds in Radcliff.

The eighth annual Hooray for Heroes celebration is from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday next to Stithton Baptist Church in Radcliff. An evening segment with a USO theme will honor World War II veterans. It is scheduled from 7 to 8:45 p.m. in the church auditorium.

Fundraising 'dream team...

The next step toward establishing the Kentucky High School Basketball Hall of Fame in Elizabethtown began this week with hiring of a consulting company to coordinate fundraising.

A group of former basketball coaches with business acumen and fundraising experience will direct the effort. It’s headed by Mike Pollio, who was part of the University of Louisville capital campaign that led to construction of Papa John’s Cardinal Stadiuam.
