Local tourism up 9.1 percent in...

Hardin County’s tourism industry is flourishing

A report from the Kentucky Tourism, Arts and Heritage Cabinet indicated the county’s direct economic impact from tourism climbed 9.1 percent in 2012, infusing the local economy with more than $15 million of additional spending above the prior year.

The county recorded $182 million in direct tourism spending during 2012, according to a joint news release issued by the Elizabethtown Tourism and Convention Bureau and the Radcliff-Fort Knox Tourism and Convention Commission.

Third set of plans to be...

Plans to build a tornado shelter in Vine Grove have stalled over the last several months because of residents’ aesthetic opinions and money.

Officials hope a third design will get the project back on track.

Mayor Blake Proffitt told Vine Grove City Council members Monday during their monthly meeting that a third design is expected to be submitted to the city next week for a community tornado shelter.

From Vietnam to America: Dr....

Dr. Nguyen Tien Young’s life has taken him from war-torn Vietnam to a medical practice in Elizabethtown.

He came to the United States 38 years ago after escaping Vietnam. A physician in chief of the First Battalion Marine Corps of South Vietnam, he fought against the communist Vietnamese forces during the Vietnam War.

“I was on the battlefront, I faced the enemy and I’m one of the lucky ones,” he said.

He served in the mountains until his unit was ordered to withdraw to a southern province.

As the weather warms, a nice glass of tea or something cold and fruity hits the spot.

My favorite type of tea is peach and the sweeter the better. It’s perfect to sip while sitting on the front porch swing reading a book and enjoying the fresh spring air.

A cold glass of sweet tea is the picture of southern hospitality and great to serve any guest.

Derby is over, but Churchill Downs is open for spring racing and you might want to make these treats any time for entertaining. I made Derby Cupcakes, Eighth Race Pie and Bourbon Pecan Pie for a Derby party in Louisville and they were loved by all.

The recipe for the Derby Cupcakes is a delightful find and a great addition or substitution for Derby Pie.

Tea to encourage strong mother-...

A Radcliff church is encouraging good relationships between mothers and daughters this weekend with a new event.

The All Nations Worship Ministries Daughters of Destiny is hosting its first mother-daughter tea from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday at Colvin Community Center on Freedom Way in Radcliff.

The cost is $15 for each set of mothers and daughters and $2.50 for each additional person, which covers a luncheon.

Delays expected at Ring Road, Ky...

Signal alignment work begins at 9 a.m. today at the intersection of Ring Road and Ky. 251 in Elizabethtown.

The work is expected to last between 30 minutes and an hour, according to a Kentucky Transportation Cabinet news release. Motorists along Ky. 251 will be required to find alternate routes around the intersection while work is underway.

Also on Ky. 251 today, crews will shift signals to accommodate the alignment of the road. Traffic will be reduced to one lane.

Colors casing ceremony next week

The 3rd Infantry Brigade Combat team, 1st Infantry Division is headed back to the front lines.

Fort Knox is hosting a colors casing ceremony for the unit 10 a.m. Tuesday at Brooks Field on post as its members ramp up for another tour of Afghanistan.

Not all of the unit’s roughly 3,500 soldiers will deploy. Sgt. Thomas Duval with the 3/1 Public Affairs Office said the numbers continue to fluctuate but about 2,000 soldiers are expected to leave.
