Jury trial begins for Sturgill

The trial in the case against a former West Point man accused of sending sexually themed electronic messages to two minor girls began Monday with juror selection.

One of the girls was a foster child who lived in Sturgill’s home.

Jimmie Sturgill, 65, of Catlettsburg, faces 19 sex-related felony charges in Hardin County. However, the jury trial that began Monday concerns 16 of those charges.

According to police, Sturgill sent sexually charged messages via Facebook to two minor girls between September 2010 and May 2011.

Donations, garage sale to help...

Large donations from local companies and a city-organized garage sale are planned to propel efforts to create a playground accessible to all children in Vine Grove.

The Swope Family of Dealerships and 84 Lumber Co. are the latest in a series of businesses to offer financial support for constructing a playground that could be used by all children, including those with disabilities.

Swope presented a check Monday for $4,750 to Rachel Ritchie, 9, and her family for the Fun for Everyone playground.

County issues bonds for HMH...

Hardin Memorial Health now has the financial assurance to complete millions in renovations and improvements, primarily at its main campus on Dixie Avenue.

Hardin Fiscal Court approved up to $40 million in hospital revenue bonds Tuesday to pay for HMH’s master facilities plan, which will increase the number of private suites available, renovate semi-private rooms into private quarters, upgrade the cancer care center by moving it offsite and renovate the emergency department.

E'town introduces budget

Elizabethtown City Council admitted to some heated debates during this year’s budget session, but they were in accord Monday as Mayor Tim Walker presented the city’s nearly $60.2 million budget.

The proposed budget, which was reduced slightly from last year, recommends more than $10 million in funding for sanitary sewer improvements and keeps services stable with a nearly $28 million general fund. Once capital projects are added, the budget exceeds $73 million.

OWENSBORO— As Central Hardin coach Jamie Goodman addressed his dejected team early Thursday evening, he reminded the Lady Bruins of the beauty of the Rawlings/KHSAA State Softball Tournament.

A nonprofit organization is in the planning stages of attempting to establish temporary housing for families of soldiers in Fort Knox’s Warrior Transition Battalion.

The Fort Knox Warriors in Transition Association was established about three months ago with the goal in mind of finding a way to pay for temporary housing for WTB families either on or near post, organization president Peter Trzop said.

A local department store spruced up an elementary school in Elizabethtown as an anniversary present to the community.

Volunteers from Belk in Elizabethtown and Hands On Nashville, an agency that coordinates volunteerism projects, offered their time and services Monday to Helmwood Heights Elementary School. The volunteer project is part of Belk’s 125 Days of Service, a celebration of the department store’s 125th anniversary.

Innovative inventors: Students...

Kids tearing apart household items and creating catapults sounds like a nightmarish summer day for an average parent, but it’s just all in good educational fun at a summer camp.

The annual Camp Invention is running this week at Meadow View Elementary School. The camp, for elementary and incoming middle school students, gives attendees a week of hands-on activities that cover a variety of subjects such as science, geography and entrepreneurship. The catapult, for instance, is a physics lesson wrapped up in cardboard, tape and a variety of other materials.
