Mayor Walker died of heart attack

Elizabethtown Mayor Tim Walker died suddenly Friday morning from a heart attack brought on by a cardiovascular disease, said Chief Deputy Hardin County Coroner Kenneth Spangenberger.

Spangenberger pronounced Walker dead at 5:33 a.m. Friday at Hardin Memorial Hospital. He was 54.

At least two local churches will dissolve their charters with the Boy Scouts of America once they expire later this year because of a new policy accepting gay youth into the organization, which takes effect Jan. 1, 2014.

Severns Valley Baptist Church in Elizabethtown and Rineyville Baptist Church have disavowed their partnerships with scouting because the new policy contradicts Biblical and church standards adhered to by both congregations, church leaders said Tuesday.

Two Radcliff women are in custody after an altercation at a Waffle House restaurant in Radcliff left a third woman with a 2-inch gash on her forehead after she was struck with a sugar dispenser.

Ashley Dubose, 24, and Alisa Ruttley, 23, are charged with second-degree assault and second-degree criminal mischief. The assault charge is a Class C felony punishable by 5 to 10 years in prison.

According to the arrest warrant, after 6 a.m. May 19, Ruttley held the third woman down while Dubose struck her with with the sugar dispenser.

A sergeant in the U.S. Army Cadet Command 1st Brigade was arrested after police say he intoxicated a female relative and then raped her.

Sgt. 1st Class Felix Manuel Ayala, who lives in Radcliff, was arrested Friday morning when the woman, who is older than 18, reported to police what she said happened  around 10:30 p.m. Thursday.

Ayala, 45, is charged with first-degree rape, incapable of consent. Among the other charges he faces are first-degree sexual abuse and first-degree sodomy, incapable of consent.

An Elizabethtown teen faces more than 20 theft- and drug-related charges following an indictment by a Hardin County grand jury.

Kyle David Schwanz, 19, was indicted Thursday on three counts of receiving stolen property less than $10,000, three counts of theft of a legend drug, second-degree burglary, receiving a stolen firearm, second-degree fleeing or evading police, second-degree possession of a controlled substance, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and 11 counts of receiving stolen property less than $500.

Elizabethtown City Hall was full Friday morning, but its inhabitants were hollowed out by the news of Mayor Tim Walker’s death.

Standing outside his office, city officials huddled together in a show of unity, struggling with the surreal nature of his absence. Many pointed out they had spoken to Walker just hours before and all signs indicated he was well.

On Sunday, Skyliar Thomas married a woman who already had his first name and took his last.

Skyliar Thomas and Scylar Drake-Thomas met three months ago at a tattoo parlor. The two got to know each other and quickly learned they had more in common than their names.

The night they met, Skyliar and Scylar saw each other again at Walmart.

Former Vine Grove mayor...

Twrena Vowels remembers the way her husband of 27 years always supported whatever she, their children and grandchildren wanted to do.

She and her husband, Thomas Wayne Vowels, loved to travel and collect antiques. The former Vine Grove mayor never tried to stop his wife when she wanted to do something in which he had no interest.

“He said, ‘You know you don’t have to ask me,’” she said. “I can hear him now.”

Vowels, 72, of Vine Grove died Wednesday at Hardin Memorial Hospital.
