LEXINGTON — The Central Hardin Bruins are repeating history, while Coach Todd Thompson was more concerned with not letting something happen again.

The Bruins scored two runs in the third, just as they did in Tuesday’s win over Lone Oak, and junior Troy Riggs supplied a three-run double in the seventh en route to a 6-1 victory over the Harrison County Thorobreds on Thursday in the Forcht Bank/KHSAA State Baseball Tournament at Whitaker Bank Ballpark.

A University of Kentucky study seeks to unearth the past at Fort Duffield without digging a single hole.

Philip Mink, an archeologist and anthropologist at UK, paced a $40,000 piece of equipment on small wheels back and forth along measured paths in an area that might have been a burial site for Civil War soldiers.

“It’s not very exciting to watch,” he said. “It’s like mowing the grass.”

Kevin and Francesca Smith were shouting instructions to staff members over a cellphone as they rushed into the delivery room this past Derby Day.

As Francesca prepared to deliver the couple’s son, Alessandro, the two stable employees were working to deliver a quarter horse foal back on the Elizabethtown couple’s farm.

Both baby and foal were delivered healthy on the famous horse racing day.

That seemed fitting for the couple, who currently own 37 horses, mostly quarter horses, on about 20 acres of land.

Leonard Lawson has broken out his fiddle skills in scores of competitions through the years and said the finest compliment he ever received came from a Springfield, Mo., man who commented on what Lawson called his “crazy” dress.  

“He said you’re a right respectful lookin’ fiddle player, but there’s a lot of Baptist preachers who would say there’s no such thing,” Lawson recalled, laughing.
