GIRLS" PREP TENNIS OPINION...

There are certain ways to tell spring has finally arrived. The weather starts to get warmer, although it seemed like that wasn’t going to happen this year. The flowers start to bloom, and in turn, anyone with allergies like me begins to have problems. The trees and grass begin to turn green once again.

Possibly the biggest sign spring is in full bloom in our area is the Elizabethtown girls’ tennis team wins another 5th Region championship. It seems like a rite of passage every spring.

PREP TRACK: E'town, North...

If all goes according to plan tonight, the Elizabethtown and North Hardin track teams likely will be celebrating region title sweeps.

The Class 3-A, Region 2 and the 2-A, Region 2 meets are tonight. All four squads have been at the top of their respective regions for the last several years, and that’s exactly where all four hope to stay.

Elizabethtown’s girls are vying for their ninth consecutive region title, while the North Hardin boys and girls and the Elizabethtown boys are shooting for No. 6.

Reds' great Tony Perez...

It’s been more than 25 years since Tony Perez played in a Major League Baseball game and another decade since he managed, but fans – young and old – lined up to meet the Hall of Famer on Wednesday morning.

Perez, who was affectionately known as “Big Dog” or “Doggie” to Cincinnati Reds fans, was on hand for the grand opening of Ollie’s Bargain Outlet in Radcliff. He signed baseball cards, balls, bats, jerseys, helmets and even a couple of bobbleheads and posed for countless photos for fans who turned out by the droves.

The Tomodachi Coca-Cola Homestay program returns to the city from July 26 to Aug. 6 and supports Japan’s recovery from the Great East Japan Earthquake by building cultural and economic ties between the two countries.

PREP TENNIS: Tough draw for...

The KHSAA State Tennis Tournament draw Monday night turned out to be favorable for some area players and downright cruel to others – especially in the boys’ doubles bracket.

The area earned two seeds for girls, but all three area entries into the boys’ doubles bracket earned first-round matches with seeded duos.
