OUR VIEW: Student athletes, Hosparus, Relay

We’re going to toot our horn a little here and that of many, many others.

The second Select Preps banquet was held at Severns Valley Baptist Church in Elizabethtown, culminating several months of work by newspaper employees, area coaches, athletic directors and student-athletes. Dozens of businesses saw the worthiness of honoring some of our future leaders and served as sport or event sponsors.

Nolin RECC celebrates National...

Nolin Rural Electric Cooperative Corporation joined the U.S. Senate in recognizing April 18 as National Lineman Appreciation Day. The Senate passed a resolution honoring line workers for their efforts in keeping power flowing.

Approximately one-half of Nolin’s 97 employees work in the field restoring power during outages and maintaining distribution lines and equipment. Across the nation, more than 19,000 men and women maintain 2.5 million miles of line for electric co-ops, public power districts and public utility districts.

NORTH HARDIN10, NELSON COUNTY 0. The Trojans scored three times in each of the first two innings on its way to a five-inning triumph over the visiting Cardinals.

Each of the first four hitters in North Hardin’s lineup – senior Jamaal Wilson, senior Jordan Sanchez, sophomore Javier Echevarria and junior Graham Mathews – had two hits and scored at least once. Sanchez had a pair of doubles.

Sophomore Lance Baker got the win, throwing all five innings and giving up just two hits.

Air Force Airman James L. Ashley graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland in San Antonio. A 2011 graduate of John Hardin High School, he is the son of Patricia Dodd of Elizabethtown.

Scouts beautify Saunders Springs

On April 6, the Webelos/Arrow of Light Cub Scout Den Pack 130, chartered by Memorial United Methodist Church in Elizabethtown, spread more than 5,000 pounds of gravel on hiking trails at Saunders Springs Nature Preserve in Radcliff as a community service project.

Radcliff Rotary Club recently hosted the Rotary Regional Speech Contest. The contest was open to all high school students, who gave an eight- to 10-minute speech without notes on the annual Rotary theme. This year’s theme was “Peace through service.” Beginning at their local club level, winning contestants move on to sectional, regional and district levels with cash prizes for first- through third-place winners. The winner of all four levels will accumulate $2,200.

Carissa Breeding honored in...

Carissa Breeding, a fifth-grader from Morningside Elementary School, has been honored as a district winner in the AARP/KRTA Grandparent of the Year Essay Contest. Carissa is one of 14 students who were honored in the state of Kentucky. Carissa received a plaque and a $50 check from AARP Kentucky. Lin Linder, president of the Elizabethtown-Hardin-LaRue Retired Teachers presented Carissa with the award at a school assembly May 1. Carissa also accepted a $25 check from the EHLRTA for her fifth-grade class. Principal Joe Nepi complimented Carissa on her accomplishment.
