Local tourism up 9.1 percent in 2012

Hardin County’s tourism industry is flourishing

A report from the Kentucky Tourism, Arts and Heritage Cabinet indicated the county’s direct economic impact from tourism climbed 9.1 percent in 2012, infusing the local economy with more than $15 million of additional spending above the prior year.

The county recorded $182 million in direct tourism spending during 2012, according to a joint news release issued by the Elizabethtown Tourism and Convention Bureau and the Radcliff-Fort Knox Tourism and Convention Commission.

Sophomore Zeke Pinkham hit two home runs and drove in eight runs to lead Elizabethtown to a 15-3 victory over visiting Taylor County on Thursday.

Pinkham continued his torrid spring with a grand slam and a three-run blast in the five-inning triumph, helping the Panthers (23-9) win their third straight.

Seniors Garrett Morgan and Cannon Pender and freshman Hunter Sullivan had three hits apiece to spearhead a 14-hit attack. Morgan and sophomore Cody Bridges each scored four runs.

Sullivan earned the win on the mound to improve his record to 7-2.

EIS approves tentative budget

Elizabethtown Independent Schools are weathering tight financial times with the district’s savings.

The EIS board approved the district’s tentative budget Monday night at its regular meeting at Panther Academy. The budget shows the district spending more out of its general fund than it’s taking in, but a hefty contingency and starting balance in the budget allows the move, according to Finance Director Denise Morgan.

Patton Museum staff brings different experiences, resources to collections

Every staff member of the Gen. George Patton Museum of Leadership is working to revamp the space where tanks and armor used to reside. Curator Nathan Jones said the team is diverse, representing different functions of the museum world.

Jones often is mistaken for the museum’s director, the administrative leader of the staff who supervises daily operations. He defers those questions because his job title is more academic in nature.

Elizabethtown artist's shot at exhibit pays off

A Louisville museum exhibition focusing on some whiskey business got a double shot of help from an Elizabethtown artist who used a unique approach in creating her porcelain shot glasses.

“I had this idea of making a shot glass out of clay and then shooting it,” Verna McLaughlin said, explaining the idea came from taking the term “shot glass” literally.
