Gibson named Miss LaRue County...

Patricia Ann Gibson, 17, daughter of Roger and Melanie Wells of Hodgenville, was crowned Miss LaRue County Fair on Monday, after an evening of torrential rain, thunder claps and mud.

She also was named Most Photogenic.

Gibson and 14 other contestants were transported by trucks from one side of the LaRue County Fairgrounds to the Morrison building. Volunteers held umbrellas as they entered buildings to keep them dry.

OK, I’m not sure how this happened, but my home has become a part-time karaoke bar.

OK, I do know how it happened, but I’m not telling.

OK, I’m telling.

You see, it all began with a karaoke machine. It was one of those portable units that needs to be hooked up to a TV or monitor. I bought it for my other half, Rebecca Ricks, for Christmas about a year and a half ago.

That’s how it starts: you think the karaoke is going to be limited to a whimsical pastime with your sweetie.

Swim team coach Mavi Sampaio spent Father’s Day with his extended family, the Elizabethtown Dolphins, as his immediate family – wife Ana and teenage daughters Mariana and Manuela – are spending part of the summer in his native Brazil.

“It’s just me and the dog,” Sampaio lamented from the boat dock at Freeman Lake Park in Elizabethtown on Sunday afternoon.

Firefighters long ago became  champions of the WHAS Crusade for Children, which raises money for children with special needs throughout Kentucky and southern Indiana.

Although money is raised throughout the year, the firefighter at a road block, bucket in hand, is the image that signals the campaign’s peak each spring.

I still call my dad most every morning. While I’m driving to work, he’s slowly but surely making his way to breakfast in the retirement facility where my parents now live.

I sometimes have difficulty communicating on the phone with Dad since his hearing is not what it used to be. (Dad just turned 89.) So, I was encouraged when Dad told me he was getting new hearing aids. I thought that would make our conversations easier.

“I just got my new hearing aids,” he proudly announced one morning not long ago.
