  • PREP BASEBALL/SOFTBALL ROUNDUP: Bulldogs, Bruins win season openers

    Senior Ryan Carek was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to lift the homestanding John Hardin Bulldogs to a 6-5 win over Glasgow on Monday in both teams’ season openers.

    Sophomore Garrett Ray scored the winning run.

    Senior Jacob Skaff got the win in relief of senior Cody Creamer, who struck out nine in five innings.

    Creamer singled twice and drove in a run, while junior Claudio Deaza had two singles and two RBIs.

  • GIRLS' 5th REGION TOURNAMENT: LaRue County pulls out a victory (3/2)

    LEBANON– The LaRue County Lady Hawks made sure their first trip to the Girls’ 5th Region Basketball Tournament since 2004 will be lengthy one.

    The Lady Hawks jumped out to a 14-2 lead and held on for a 53-46 victory over the Washington County Commanderettes in the first round of the region tournament Tuesday night.

  • BOYS' 17TH DISTRICT TOURNAMENT: Elizabethtown wins in 4 overtimes

    In what was the longest Boys’ 17th District Basketball Tournament game ever, Elizabethtown survived.

    Terry Jones staved off his exhaustion and put his driving skills to work. The Panthers’ senior guard took charge. He was going to go to the hole and score any way he could.

    Senior forward Mitchell Henry scored a game-high 22 points, senior forward Chris McDonald had 14 and Jones added 12 to lift Elizabethtown to an 81-76 four-overtime victory over No. 9 John Hardin in Saturday night’s district championship game at Central Hardin.

  • GIRLS' PREP BASKETBALL: Cecil leads Etown to win over John Hardin (01/23)

    Oh Cecil-ia.

    Elizabethtown junior guard Kaylyn Cecil had the John Hardin Lady Bulldogs back on their knees early in the first half.

    Her first-quarter scoring outburst, along the Lady Panthers’ stifling defense, lifted Elizabethtown to another 17th District win Saturday night.

    Cecil scored nine of her game-high 18 points in the first quarter and senior Natalie Greenwell added 11 points to lead Elizabethtown to a 60-37 win.

  • PREP BASKETBALL: North uses strength inside to top Central (1/5)

    Tuesday night’s pivotal 17th District clash matched strength against strength – North Hardin’s power inside game against Central Hardin’s perimeter attack.

    Both teams did what they do best, but the Trojans size advantage proved to be too much. Senior Chris Sterusky and junior Adam Hendrix combined for 44 points – all inside the 3-point arc – to offset 12 Central Hardin 3-pointers and post a 72-65 victory at Bruin Gym.

  • PREP BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Hawks win own tourney; Lady Panthers win Mercer County tourney (12/31)

    LaRue County junior guard Kyle Sheeran scored 22 points and the host Hawks erased a seven-point deficit to win the championship of the National Guard Holiday Classic with a 61-50 win over Barren County on Thursday.

    Sheeran also had six rebounds, five assists and three steals for the Hawks (8-3), while sophomore guard Kelton Ford scored 11 points – all from the free-throw line – to go along with three rebounds, three steals and one assist.

    Senior forward Chase Reynolds added nine points, six rebounds and one block.

  • GIRLS' PREP BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Lady Bulldogs rout East Jessamine (12/21)

    Freshman guard Tajah Haley scored 14 points and the John Hardin Lady Bulldogs held East Jessamine scoreless in the second quarter en route to a 70-30 win in the first game of the Pinkham Lincoln-Mercury Christmas Tournament at John Hardin.

    Haley also had seven steals, four assists and three rebounds for the Lady Bulldogs (4-3), who led 33-6 at the half.

    Freshman post Zacchea Small chipped in with 12 points, while sophomore post Michelle Montgomery added 10 points and nine rebounds.

  • PREP BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: North knocks off LaRue in OT, 63-60 (12/15)

    Sophomore forward Dewyane White hit a jumper with about 8 seconds remaining to lift the visiting North Hardin Trojans to a 63-60 overtime win over 5th Region rival LaRue County on Tuesday night.

    North Hardin (2-2) led 19-8 at the end of the first quarter. The Hawks (2-2) scored 28 points in the second quarter to take a 36-31 lead at halftime.

    Junior post Adam Hendrix led North Hardin with 16 points, while sophomore guard Jordan Brangers had 15, junior forward Jauan Akins had 14 and senior forward Chris Strerusky had 13.
