    After nine years, the United States Tennis Association Kentucky is moving its Junior Team Tennis State Championships out of Louisville.

    The tournament featuring eight area teams begins today at Freeman Lake Park and University Drive Park in Elizabethtown, the first time it has been held outside of Jefferson County.

  • YOUTH LACROSSE: Tourney at...

    The NXT Events Lacrosse State Fair returns to the Elizabethtown Sports Park on Saturday and Sunday for more fast-moving madness.

    The event features 32 teams from five states: Indiana, Georgia, Kentucky, Missouri and Ohio.

    Competing in the four-team under-10 division are Commonwealth Kings Young Guns, Stickhead, True Kentucky and Young Braves.

  • PREP TRACK: Rules changes coming...

    At its June meeting, the National Federation of State High School Associations announced several rules changes — one of which will make several area athletes happy.

    The track and field rules committee proposed the ban on athletes wearing jewelry in competition be eliminated, and the rule was approved by the NFHS board of directors.

  • MEN'S GOLF: Maffet finishes...

    Kris Maffet can now claim back-to-back finishes inside the top 10 at the Kentucky Open.

    A former Elizabethtown and Louisville standout, Maffet shot a 1-over 73 Thursday to finish with a three-round 218 to end up in a three-way tie for ninth out of 156 in the 95th annual event at the 7,157-yard, par-72 Hunting Creek Country Club in Propect.

    Things got off to a rough start in the West Kentucky Cal Ripken State Tournament for two area 7-year-old All-Star teams Wednesday.

    The Elizabethtown Area Baseball Commission All-Stars lost to East Louisville, 11-3, while LaRue County fell to St. Matthews, 9-7 at University Drive Park.

    Coming on the heels of an injury to a high school coach’s daughter, the Kentucky High School Athletic Association recommended pitchers, first basemen and third basemen wear facemasks in softball next season during the KHSAA’s board of control meeting.

    Kris Maffet finished last year’s Kentucky Open with a vengeance, tying for second at The Club at Old Stone in Bowling Green.

    He started this year’s 95th event at Hunting Creek Country Club in Propect in a similar fashion.

    The Cal Ripken and Babe Ruth West Kentucky State tournaments get started tonight as pool play in the 15-year-old bracket begins at Germantown Park in Louisville.

    The Elizabethtown Area Baseball Commission All-Stars are in Pool B and plays Highview at 6 tonight and Owensboro-Daviess County at 2 p.m. Friday.
