  • BOYS' PREP CROSS COUNTRY...

    Separated by just 10 points at last year’s state cross country meet, things should be just as close between the North Hardin Trojans and Meade County Green Wave this year.

    North Hardin was seventh and Meade County eighth at State a year ago, and both teams return a wealth of talent and experience.

  • GIRLS' PREP CROSS COUNTRY...

    Hannah Godfrey? Gone.

    Mackenzie Pennington and Abbie Chandler? Also gone.

    Some of the easily recognizable names in the area girls’ cross country scene over the last few years have moved on to the next phases of their lives, be it getting an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy like Godfrey or starting college like Chandler and Pennington.

    Robert Rupp can remember a time when he didn’t give much thought to running, or to anything else, really.

    He was, by his own account, heading down some bad paths as a middle schooler, and didn’t know what was going to happen to his future.

    But as a freshman, Rupp, now a North Hardin senior, decided to give cross country a try.

    One shot here or there was the difference Saturday between the bigger runner-up trophy and a much smaller third-place trophy for the Central Hardin Bruins.

    The Bruins tied Erlanger St. Henry with a four-player 322, but St. Henry won the fifth-player tiebreaker, 87-91 in the John Hardin Bulldog Classic at the par-72, 6,502-yard Lindsey Golf Course on Fort Knox.

    The homestanding Elizabethtown Lady Panthers ran their winning streak to three after picking up two wins Saturday.

    Elizabethtown beat Collins, 3-1 (25-17, 25-21, 25-27, 25-18) and came from behind to knock off Louisville Whitefield in five sets (22-25, 25-17, 19-25, 25-23, 15-13).

    The North Hardin Trojans had two games postponed Saturday.

    North Hardin was leading Christian Academy of Louisville, 1-0 when the game was halted because of the heat index. The Trojans were also supposed to host 17th District foe Fort Knox later that night, but that game was canceled because of storms.
