  • PREP SOFTBALL ROUNDUP: Central...

Junior April Pence threw a four-hit shutout, sophomore Kelsey McGuffin hit her area-leading tenth home run and the No. 9 Central Hardin softball team went into the postseason on a high note with a 6-0 victory over visiting Taylor County.

Pence earned her 11th victory by striking out one and walking just one, giving the Lady Bruins their second victory over the Lady Cardinals (27-9) in the last nine days.

  • GIRLS' PREP TENNIS: More...

LEXINGTON — When she finally got to take the court for the first time Thursday during the opening day of the KHSAA State Tennis Tournament at the University of Kentucky, Elizabethtown senior doubles player Mary-Chapin Snow had time to almost finish a 272-page book.

Maybe that book — Gillian Flynn’s Sharp Objects, which Snow actually called a quick read — seemed long, but then again, so was her wait.

  • PREP TRACK: Meers, Johnson hope...

Dante Johnson and Bryce Meers want to help North Hardin make history by becoming the first school to win both the boys’ and girls’ team titles at the KHSAA State Track & Field Championships.

And if all goes according to plan for the dynamic duo, they’ll get the day started off with a bang in Saturday’s Class 3-A state meet at the University of Louisville’s Owsley Frazier Cardinal Park.

  • PREP ROUNDUP: Panthers rout...

Sophomore Zeke Pinkham hit two home runs and drove in eight runs to lead Elizabethtown to a 15-3 victory over visiting Taylor County on Thursday.

Pinkham continued his torrid spring with a grand slam and a three-run blast in the five-inning triumph, helping the Panthers (23-9) win their third straight.

Seniors Garrett Morgan and Cannon Pender and freshman Hunter Sullivan had three hits apiece to spearhead a 14-hit attack. Morgan and sophomore Cody Bridges each scored four runs.

Sullivan earned the win on the mound to improve his record to 7-2.

  • PREP SOFTBALL: Lady Hawks rout E...

Heading into the postseason, LaRue County coach Aaron Howell liked what he saw from his Lady Hawks on Thursday.

They pounded out 20 hits, scored 13 runs and backed junior pitcher Brigitte Skaggs with solid defense to roll to a 13-2 win over homestanding 5th Region rival Elizabethtown.

When the Lady Hawks are playing like this, Howell said they are a dangerous team.

  • BOYS' PREP TENNIS:...

LEXINGTON — All three area doubles teams knew they had their work cut out for them in going up against seeded opponents in the KHSAA State Tennis Tournament.

When you add in a withdrawal, a third-set loss and a busted racket, area singles players didn’t have much luck either.

  • PREP BASEBALL: Meade's...

Meade County senior Jake Wilson grew up knowing what he wanted to do after high school. He wanted to play Division I baseball.

Wilson fulfilled a lifelong dream Wednesday afternoon as he signed a national letter of intent to play next season at Eastern Kentucky. Although he was the starting quarterback for football, the 6-foot-3, 215-pound Wilson had his sights set on baseball the entire time.

  • Reds' great Tony Perez...

It’s been more than 25 years since Tony Perez played in a Major League Baseball game and another decade since he managed, but fans – young and old – lined up to meet the Hall of Famer on Wednesday morning.

Perez, who was affectionately known as “Big Dog” or “Doggie” to Cincinnati Reds fans, was on hand for the grand opening of Ollie’s Bargain Outlet in Radcliff. He signed baseball cards, balls, bats, jerseys, helmets and even a couple of bobbleheads and posed for countless photos for fans who turned out by the droves.

  • PREP TENNIS: Anderson and McCann...

With just a casual glance at Jared Anderson and Carson McCann, they seem to be an unusual fit as doubles partners.

Anderson is a senior, stands 6-foot-4 and rocks neatly kept, short hair.

McCann, in contrast, is a freshman and though he says he is 6-foot, appears much shorter when standing next to Anderson. And the most distinguishable part of McCann is his long, flowing hair that nearly reaches his shoulders.

If you have to put a label on the John Hardin tandem, an appropriate nickname would be Hardin County’s “Odd Couple.”

  • PREP TRACK: Royal, Jones...

Prior to the season, Bill Larrington was worried the Elizabethtown Panthers wouldn’t have anyone competing in the boys’ high jump. That would mean giving up critical points throughout the season.

Having coached the high jump for several years, this was an unusual predicament for Larrington. But after years of pestering and prodding, Larrington finally convinced senior Chas Jones to join the team, and a few months later, found a diamond in the rough shooting hoops inside Charlie Rawlings Memorial Gymnasium during spring break.
