  • PREP FOOTBALL: LaRue matched up...

The LaRue County Hawks know they have an uphill battle tonight at Corbin in the first round of the Class 3-A state playoffs. That doesn’t mean they had to practice and prepare like it, though.

  • PREP FOOTBALL: Bulldogs'...

John Hardin senior C.J. Hill remembers the good times. He only has to think back to a season ago when the Bulldogs were one of the top teams in Class 5-A. An era when the wins were frequent and worries were not.

  • PREP FOOTBALL: Bruins focused on...

The last three weeks have been filled with nonstop celebrations for the Central Hardin Bruins.

Beating Meade County for the first time in 15 years. Clinching the first district title in 22 years. And finally, last week, completing the first undefeated regular season in program history.

  • PREP FOOTBALL: Green Wave face...

One way or another, one of the top 11 teams in Class 6-A is going home tonight.

In what Coach Larry Mofield called “the toughest first-round game in the state,” 10th-ranked Meade County hosts No. 11 Lexington Henry Clay at 7:30 tonight at Hamilton Field in the opening round of the 6-A state playoffs.

What a way to kick things off.

  • PREP CROSS COUNTRY: Bruins...

After winning their first region cross country title in the school’s 25-year history, it’s back to business for the Central Hardin Bruins.

Celebrating the Class 3-A, Region 2 title was nice, but Coach Tim Pennington knows his team must focus on the task at hand Saturday: the KHSAA State Cross Country Championships at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington.

  • GIRLS' PREP CROSS COUNTRY:...

Taylor Kuklinski knew something just didn’t feel right.

Jillian Shufelt was having trouble breathing while running.

It was July, just before cross country season started, when the pain began for both of them.

After seeing their doctors, Kuklinski and Shufelt were diagnosed with the same condition in August: a heart murmur.

  • PREP FOOTBALL: Elizabethtown...

Mark Brown has an impressive list of accomplishments in his career as a high school football coach. Most of those feats don’t involve working immediate miracles.

So he was perfectly content in going 7-3 in his first season with the Elizabethtown Panthers, who host the Wayne County Cardinals at 7:30 p.m. Friday in the first round of the Class 3-A state playoffs.

  • PREP FOOTBALL: Bryan, Willis...

When stepping into a new situation, any wise coach will scour the previous season’s film to get a better idea of what he has to work with.

With access to the Central Hardin Bruins’ second half of last season, Tim Mattingly saw a lot of Koree Krupinski. He saw a lot of Zach Helton and Xavier Arnette, a lot of Alex Hawkins and Seth Bryan.

  • GIRLS' PREP BOWLING: Trio...

While other area teams have one or two girls capable of putting up big numbers this season on the bowling lanes, the Central Hardin Lady Bruins have a three-headed monster.

  • PREP FOOTBALL: John Hardin hits...

Starting the playoffs at Bulldog Stadium has been a luxury the John Hardin Bulldogs have become accustomed to the last decade. They haven’t started the playoffs on the road since 2004, when the current sophomores were just starting kindergarten.
