    HODGENVILLE — Needing just one more first down to seal the game, the homestanding LaRue County Hawks fumbled away their chance Friday night at finally earning a victory in their new district.

    “It’s the strangest loss I’ve ever had and it happened perfectly for them,” said veteran LaRue County coach Rodney Armes. “It was a crazy thing. It was a huge letdown.”

    LOUISVILLE — John Hardin’s 22-game regular season winning streak came to an end Friday night.

    And so did the Bulldogs’ hopes of winning a fourth consecutive district championship.

    The Louisville Doss Dragons handed the Bulldogs a 27-21 loss to win the regular season Class 5-A, District 3 championship at Hayward Shartzer Stadium.

    SHELBYVILLE — The North Hardin Christian Lady Falcons won their second consecutive Kentucky Christian Athletic Association state championship with a 25-13, 12-25, 25-16 victory over Somerset Christian on Saturday at Cornerstone Christian.

    Coach Cassie Holley, who has guided the Lady Falcons to four runner-up finishes from 2003-06, couldn’t decide which title was sweeter.

    LOUISVILLE — Chris Gohman etched his name into the KHSAA record books on Friday night.

    A senior wide receiver for the Elizabethtown Panthers, Gohman moved into the top 10 in receptions and receiving touchdowns and 11th in receiving yards as the Panthers secured a first-round home playoff game with a 47-14 win over the homestanding Shawnee Golden Eagles at Shawnee Alumni Stadium.

    CECILIA — Their postseason hopes were dashed a long time ago, but Tristan Long and the rest of the Central Hardin Bruins are still finding plenty to play for.

    A sophomore running back/defensive back, Long caught a touchdown pass and had an end-zone interception Friday night as the defensive-minded Bruins stunned regular-season Class 6-A, District 2 champion Bowling Green Greenwood, 14-7.

    ELIZABETHTOWN — Not even a week-long layoff can slow Maggie Mattingly down.

    A John Hardin High School junior, Mattingly won her third event of the season by finishing first Saturday in North Hardin’s Harrier Fall Classic at Severns Valley Baptist Church.

    Mattingly won the 5-kilometer race in 18 minutes and 55.40 seconds, besting Meade County freshman April Level, who finished in 20:36.40.

    BRANDENBURG — Meade County coach Larry Mofield never imagined 10 points would be enough to hold off the North Hardin Trojans.

    Then again, he never imagined his team would force six Trojan turnovers.

    “No, I didn’t think 10 points would be enough,” Mofield said. “I got a little conservative in the play calling, so you could say I was part of (the low scoring), but that’s because I realized our defense was playing well.”
