Ask any coach and they will pretty much all tell you there is nothing easy about beating a team three — let alone four — times in a season.

Being on the losing end isn’t easy, either.

The Central Hardin Lady Bruins found that out last season, having an otherwise strong year derailed by four losses to 17th District rival North Hardin, including losses in the district and 5th Region Tournament finals.

Matt Mardis hasn’t been on the job very long, but already he fully understands his young and relatively inexperienced Elizabethtown Lady Panthers could be in for a long season.

Elizabethtown, which went 15-14 last year under former coach Kyle Goodlett, lost six players due to graduation and one starter to transfer.

All North Hardin did last year was enter the season unranked in the preseason and finish as the last public school standing at the state tournament in Owensboro.

What does the Trojans’ encore performance entail? Get back to State, that’s what.

Coming off one of the most successful seasons in school history, the Meade County Lady Waves aren’t focusing on how to get back to the level they played at last season.

They think they can take it a step further.

“You know, 30-5 is hard to top, but I feel like we have a shot at that,” Meade County coach Mike Harreld said.

Shaney Seawright is ready for the opportunity ahead of her.

Seawright is the third softball coach in three years at North Hardin Christian, replacing Nicki Coleman. But that doesn’t mean Seawright isn’t excited.

“I look forward to having the opportunity to develop this team,” she said. “I’m looking forward to working with their talents and being able to develop them to a higher level.”

Unlike a lot of team sports, high school softball allows one player, if that player just happens to be a standout pitcher, to control a game.

North Hardin has two of its own controllers in senior Jessica Shartzer and junior Andrea Whelan. The pitchers, who play third base when they’re not in the circle, combined for 32 wins and more than 225 strikeouts last year while leading the Trojans to a 32-6-1 record, a sweep of the 17th District and 5th Region tournament titles and a third-place finish at State.

Despite losing his top two pitchers and four other starters, Jim Wimp said he’s “rejuvenated” by the group he has at North Hardin Christian.

The Falcons lost starting pitchers Haustin Kimbrough (graduation) and Ben Naething (moved to Kansas), three starting infielders in Alex Fowl (transfer), Naething and Matt Mui (graduation) and two starting outfielders in Daniel Gardner (transfer) and Michael Ford, who’s no longer on the team.

The Central Hardin Bruins have appeared in three consecutive 5th Region championship games – including winning in 2008 – and the common denominator between those teams have been the Bruins’ rock solid pitching staffs.

The Bruins, who set a single-season record for wins last year after going 27-8, figure to be in the mix for a region title once again due to another strong pitching staff. The Bruins return three of their top five pitchers.
