  • GIRLS' PREP BASKETBALL:...

North Hardin coach James Slaven was concerned with how his young Lady Trojans would react in their season opener at Hart County on Monday night.

Slaven didn’t have to wait long to get his answer.

North Hardin fell behind 16-0 in the first 5 minutes and North Hardin didn’t score until junior Brianna Woodson hit a free throw with 2:16 left in the first quarter.

Despite the shaky start, the Lady Trojans overcame it, going toe-to-toe with one of the most experienced teams in the 5th Region before falling to Hart County, 78-63.

  • PREP BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Fort...

The host Fort Knox Eagles turned a two-point lead after the first 8 minutes into a double-digit cushion at halftime as they toppled 5th Region rival Caverna, 67-61 in both teams’ season opener Monday night.

Senior Jermell Rogers paced Fort Knox with 20 points, six rebounds and two steals, while senior Gadiel Mendez added 17 points and five assists. Senior Brandon Cullum chipped in with 10 points, seven rebounds and three assists and Rashad Orange had 12 rebounds and eight points.

Fort Knox hit the boards hard as five Eagles had six rebounds or more.

For the first quarter Monday night, the Meade County Lady Waves had high hopes of knocking off former 17th District rival Elizabethtown.

Freshman guard Raley Johnson hit 4-of-6 3-pointers to spark the homestanding Lady Waves to a one-point lead at the end of the period.

Then, just like coach Josh Hurt predicted in the preseason, Meade County’s inexperience began to show. Elizabethtown outscored the Lady Waves, 25-15 in the second quarter and pulled away in the second half on its way to a 78-55 victory in both teams’ season opener.

The 2010 high school football season concluded Friday night. And what a season it was.

The Central Hardin Bruins set a school record for wins, won a playoff game for the first time since 1997 and ended up 9-3. The North Hardin Trojans were back in the playoffs, while the Elizabethtown Panthers made a late charge.

Area high school basketball coaches have had six weeks to get their teams ready for the 2010-11 season and now they’ll get to see the fruits of their labor.

The high school season gets under way with four games tonight and four more Tuesday night. Tonight’s slate includes two girls’ games – Elizabethtown at Meade County at 7:30 and North Hardin at Hart County at 8 – and a Fort Knox-Caverna girl/boy doubleheader.

  • PREP BASKETBALL: North's...

The season isn’t beginning the way the defending 5th Region champion North Hardin Trojans envisioned.

The Trojans, who finished last season 27-5, were one of the preseason favorites to win the region, but they were dealt a major loss Saturday night when junior point guard Jermaine Ruttley went down with possibly a season-ending injury.

“That’s a pretty big blow to take,” North Hardin coach Ron Bevars said.
