When it comes to winning the state wrestling championship, the LaRue County Hawks haven’t had the best of luck.

Injuries, unfavorable draws, you name it. The Hawks have seen it all at the KHSAA State Wrestling Tournament.

This year, though, longtime LaRue County coach Gary Canter thinks Lady Luck will be on his team’s side. The top-ranked Hawks, with their eight region champs in tow, are expected to be in contention for the school’s first state title this weekend at the Kentucky Horse Park’s Alltech Arena in Lexington.

  • PREP WRESTLING: LaRue's...

It was a routine play Drew Newberry has made countless times in his life. It was a play the LaRue County Hawks used time and time again to gash the defense of the Elizabethtown Panthers to the tune of 561 rushing yards that night in late September 2010.

Newberry took a handoff on an off-tackle run to the left. He cut up field, got past Elizabethtown’s secondary and went to make another cut to get past another defender. His knee, however, gave out on him.
