  • GIRLS" PREP TENNIS OPINION...

There are certain ways to tell spring has finally arrived. The weather starts to get warmer, although it seemed like that wasn’t going to happen this year. The flowers start to bloom, and in turn, anyone with allergies like me begins to have problems. The trees and grass begin to turn green once again.

Possibly the biggest sign spring is in full bloom in our area is the Elizabethtown girls’ tennis team wins another 5th Region championship. It seems like a rite of passage every spring.

  • PREP BASEBALL/SOFTBALL ROUNDUP:...

Senior starter Aaron Vance and sophomore reliever Thomas Kimble combined for 11 strikeouts as the visiting North Hardin Trojans beat 17th District rival Fort Knox, 8-1 on Wednesday.

Vance (1-0) struck out five in three innings, while Kimble had six strikeouts in four.

Senior Jamaal Wilson had a double, two RBIs and a run for North Hardin (15-12, 4-4 district), which led 4-1 after three innings before pulling away from the Eagles (4-24, 0-8). Senior Jordan Sanchez singled and drove in two runs, while junior Graham Mathews had an RBI single.

  • PREP TRACK: E'town, North...

If all goes according to plan tonight, the Elizabethtown and North Hardin track teams likely will be celebrating region title sweeps.

The Class 3-A, Region 2 and the 2-A, Region 2 meets are tonight. All four squads have been at the top of their respective regions for the last several years, and that’s exactly where all four hope to stay.

Elizabethtown’s girls are vying for their ninth consecutive region title, while the North Hardin boys and girls and the Elizabethtown boys are shooting for No. 6.

  • PREP SOFTBALL: E'town tops...

Although she’s just an eighth-grader, the importance of Wednesday’s game against the John Hardin Lady Bulldogs wasn’t lost on Elizabethtown pitcher Morgan White.

Knowing her homestanding Lady Panthers needed a win to have a shot at earning the No. 3 seed for the 17th District Softball Tournament, White turned in arguably the best performance of her career.

White took a no-hit bid into the fourth inning and finished with five strikeouts in five innings as Elizabethtown topped John Hardin, 7-3.

  • PREP TENNIS: Central Hardin, E...

As he sat in the Central Hardin gym before school Tuesday, Hares Patel stared up at all of the school’s region title banners.

He noticed plenty of runner-ups for the boys’ tennis team but no region titles.

Patel then got out his phone to send a text message to the rest of the team.

“I sent a message that said, ‘We’re playing hard today, boys. I’m going to win it – for us,’” Patel said. “That was our motivation.”

  • PREP BASEBALL/SOFTBALL ROUNDUP:...

Junior Josh Krupinski struck out nine to improve to 8-0 and the Central Hardin Bruins did just enough to beat 5th Region rival Campbellsville, 2-0 on Tuesday.

Krupinski scattered two hits and two walks in four innings as the Bruins (25-3) won their fourth straight.

Senior Alex Crowder had two singles for Central Hardin, which has scored just three runs in its last two games. Junior Isaac VanMeter drove in a run with a sacrifice, while senior Gabe Hogan and freshman Justin Rouse each had a single.

  • PREP TENNIS: Seeds moving on at...

Tyler Edlin had to overcome several obstacles Tuesday.

For one, the top-seeded John Hardin junior trailed in the first set, just the second time he’s been behind in a set all season.

But equally challenging was staying loose after his opponent, seventh-seeded Marion County senior Jacob Burdette, needed to take a medical break during the second set.

Burdette recently hurt his back and required medical attention between games until he finally needed to take an extanded break to deal with the pain.

  • PREP SOFTBALL: Central Hardin...

After a rare winless weekend, the 15th-ranked Central Hardin Lady Bruins needed a game to bounce back before tonight’s huge 17th District showdown against the North Hardin Trojans.

Although it wasn’t a very long game – albeit the first inning, at least the top of it, was – the Lady Bruins got their groove back Tuesday on the road against the John Hardin Lady Bulldogs.

Junior April Pence homered and senior Jordan Lasley went 4-for-4 with a pair of extra-base hits as the Lady Bruins rolled to a 16-0 mercy-rule win in three innings.

  • PREP SOFTBALL: E'town...

Matt Mardis is getting pretty fed up with Mother Nature.

For at least the third time this season, Mardis’ Elizabethtown Lady Panthers have had to reschedule a game because of the weather. This time, it’s a 17th District tilt against the visiting John Hardin Lady Bulldogs.

The game was scheduled for Monday, but rain throughout the weekend forced Mardis to postpone it to Wednesday at 6 p.m.

  • PREP TENNIS: Bruins keep rolling...

Central Hardin coach Eric Mitchell doesn’t claim to be original.

But he is very direct in his message to his team.

Earlier this season, Mitchell gave his team bracelets that say “Always Compete and Win Forever.” It’s a nod to the philosophy Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll developed for his NFL players.

Mitchell likes the phrase because it has nothing to do with the result.
