    Two matches down, two early tests passed for the Central Hardin Lady Bruins.

    Senior left-side hitter Afton Conner had nine kills, five digs and one ace and senior middle hitter Sydney Hall chipped in with seven kills, three aces and two blocks as visiting Central Hardin swept the Nelson County Lady Cardinals in three sets Monday, 25-20, 25-19, 29-27.

    Senior middle hitter Alneisha Butler added five kills and four blocks, and senior setter Abbey Sorrells had 29 assists and one kill. Sophomore left-side hitter Lauren Christman had six kills.

    After watching his team stun the visiting Elizabethtown Panthers in the season opener last year, Fort Knox coach Shawn Thompson couldn’t help but think the Panthers might’ve overlooked his Eagles.

    Fort Knox won the game, 41-21 for Thompson’s first win on post – and the first of 11 straight losses for the Panthers, who went winless in 2011.

  • PREP SOCCER ROUNDUP: Lady...

    Junior midfielder Alexis Lopez scored twice and had two assists Monday to lead the host North Hardin Lady Trojans to a 6-1 season-opening win over first-year program Breckinridge County.

    Junior midfielders Kiera Jones and Elizabeth Laws and sophomore forward Dorothy Suzanna each had a goal and an assist, while freshman Harley Domschke also scored.

    Senior keeper Ariana Martinez made two saves.

    UP NEXT: North Hardin plays at Fort Knox at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

    Before the season started, first-year North Hardin High School volleyball coach Richard Lawson was a proponent of the KHSAA’s introduction of best 3-of-5 sets to the sport.
    He thought it’d allow athletes to have more playing time and experience.
    But after playing in a see-saw five-set match Tuesday, he’s recanted.

    Chalk up an Apollo Summer Slam Invitational silver division championship for first-year volleyball coach Bart Catlett and the Elizabethtown volleyball team.

    The Lady Panthers competed in the two-day tournament in Owensboro and finished 4-1 overall, defeating Daviess County (25-19, 25-21) and falling to Lexington Tates Creek (23-25, 25-16, 15-9) in Friday’s pool play, which sent them to the silver division.

    The 17th District boys’ soccer coaches are preparing for another season of craziness.

    The Central Hardin Bruins won their second straight district tournament title last year by knocking off surprising Meade County – which appeared to be a year ahead of schedule – in the final at home before the Bruins and the Green Wave found themselves eliminated by Bardstown teams in the 5th Region Tournament semifinals at Bethlehem.

    The Central Hardin Lady Bruins and Elizabethtown Lady Panthers were on a collision course last year, with Elizabethtown edging the Lady Bruins for the district tournament title at John Hardin before Central Hardin routed the Lady Panthers in the 5th Region Tournament final on Elizabethtown’s field.
