  • BOYS' 5TH REGION BASKETBALL...

There is no mathematical formula to figuring out the favorite for the Boys’ 5th Region Basketball Tournament, but if there was, it sure would help.

Ask the coaches involved in the tournament and you might get eight different answers. That explains how wide open the tournament is this season, which is a rarity. Most years coaches are able to pinpoint the favorite. Or at least, the co-favorites.

  • GIRLS' 5TH REGION...

Coach Chris Corder hopes the North Hardin Lady Trojans can keep their relentless pressure defense going all game.

They have to control the tempo in the Girls’ 5th Region Tournament’s opening game.

  • BOYS' 5TH REGION BASKETBALL...

There will be a sense a familiarity when the Boys’ 5th Region Tournament starts this week.

Never is that more evident than the first round matchup between the John Hardin Bulldogs and the Bardstown Bethlehem Eagles. Current John Hardin coach Mark Wells was an assistant for Artie Braden, who started the Bulldogs’ program and led them to their only region title in 2006.

  • 3RD REGION TOURNAMENTS: Green...

Jerry Garris was happy to see his Meade County Green Wave’s quarterfinal opponent for the Boys’ 3rd Region Basketball Tournament: Butler County.

The Bears (11-19) and the Owensboro Apollo Eagles (14-14) are the only two teams with non-winning records in the eight-team field at the Owensboro Sportscenter.

That’s the good news. The bad news: If the Green Wave advance, they could meet the ninth-ranked Ohio County Eagles in Friday’s semifinals.

  • PREP SWIMMING: Hardesty, Coakley...

LOUISVILLE Two weekends ago, John Hardin senior Dalton Hardesty outraced one of his top rivals to take the Region 3 Swimming Championships 100-yard butterfly crown.

This time, Woodford County junior Newell Hicks edged him out by one place for a top-five State spot.

  • PREP BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Falcons...

North Hardin Christian’s dynamic duo of Ruben Gosa and Carlos Jones combined for 51 points as the host Falcons beat the Hillview MICAH Lions, 63-58 in the KCAA 2nd Region Tournament championship Friday night.

  • BOYS' 17TH DISTRICT...

    Brandon Price redeemed himself.

After what he deemed a disappointing performance in the Boys’ 17th District Basketball Tournament semifinals, the junior guard saved John Hardin with his ability to get to the foul line and hit his free throws in Saturday’s district championship.

And he helped the Bulldogs finally finish a title game off.

  • GIRLS' 5TH REGION...

A 5th Region tradition unlike any other is on hold, at least for one round.

During the Girls’ 5th Region Basketball Tournament draw Saturday morning at tournament host Central Hardin, the 17th District Tournament runner-up North Hardin Lady Trojans (21-10) had a 50 percent chance of drawing the 20th District champion Marion County Lady Knights (28-4) for what would have been a region record fourth consecutive first-round meeting between any two teams.

  • BOYS' 11TH DISTRICT...

Bryce Garris launched a 3-pointer from just in front of the Meade County bench.

The ball swished through the net and the junior guard was fouled. He missed the ensuing free throw, but the momentum clearly had swung back into the Green Wave’s favor Friday night.
