  • PREP GOLF: North duo opens...

    North Hardin seniors Ryan Daniels and Lydia Gumm started the season off with a bang.

    Daniels fired a 6-under-par 66 to win Monday’s Cumberland County Invitational at Dale Hollow Lake State Resort Park Golf Course. The 66 also tied a course record.

    Prior to the season, Daniels said his main goal was getting back to the state tournament. He qualified as a sophomore when the Trojans won the 5th Region Tournament, but missed out last season.

  • BASKETBALL: Pettigrew to play in...

    Steffphon Pettigrew is working his way north.

    The former Elizabethtown High School and Western Kentucky University basketball star, who spent this past season playing in Uruguay, announced he is heading to Mexico because he has signed with the Abejas de Guanajuato (Guanajuato Bees).

    On his @Pettigrew30 Twitter account, Pettigrew tweeted “Excited about joining the Mexican club Abejas de Guanajuanto this season!!” Saturday before adding Sunday, “A little over a week left in town before I head to Mexico. Time sure does fly by!!”

    When Dane Lucas earlier this week heard about his former West Hardin boys’ basketball coach Pat Tully’s death, one memory came to mind.

    He and his wife, Penny, took to the internet to share it – replying to a Facebook post made by one of Tully’s daughters, Karen Simmons.

  • BASEBALL: Delabar traded to Blue...

    Former Central Hardin High School baseball standout Steve Delabar is moving closer to home in his professional career.

    Delabar has been traded from the Seattle Mariners to the Toronto Blue Jays.

    Delabar, a right-handed pitcher, was traded to the Blue Jays for outfielder Eric Thames.

  • PREP SPORTS: North to induct...

    North Hardin High School’s Athletic Hall of Fame is about to get a little bigger this fall.

    North Hardin will honor will honor this year’s inductees, as well as its 2007 and ‘11 classes, Sept. 14-15. The classes will be introduced during the Trojans’ home football game Sept. 14 against Central Hardin.

    On Sept. 15, an induction ceremony and dinner will be held at the school at 6 p.m.

  • YOUTH TRACK: Two area athletes...

    Two area youngsters achieved All-American status during the USATF National Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships this past weekend in Baltimore.

    Rineyville’s Thor Newsome finished in the top eight in both of his events, while Radcliff’s Devon Rogers finished in the top five in his event at Morgan State University’s Hughes Stadium.

  • YOUTH BASEBALL: Mattoon 12s wins...

    Before his five-day stay in Elizabethtown ended Sunday evening, Dalton Armes couldn’t have pointed out Elizabethtown on a map – because he didn’t know it even existed.

    Safe to say he left with some fond memories of it, though.

    Playing in the final of the 58-game extravaganza that was the Cal Ripken Ohio Valley Regional at the Elizabethtown Sports Park, Armes pitched and hit fifth-seeded Mattoon over second-seeded and previously undefeated Janesville in the 12-year-old championship, 5-1.

    It was a long, two-day wait for Mary-Charlotte Pepper.

    But after finding out that she’d won the girls’ 13-14-year-old 1,500-meter race and set a team record in the event Sunday at the 13-and-over Kentucky Long Course State Championships, it made up for it in a sweet way.
