  • PREP VOLLEYBALL ROUNDUP: Meade...

The Meade County Lady Waves moved one step closer to locking up the No. 1 seed for the 11th District Tournament with a two-set sweep of district rival Hancock County on Monday, 25-21, 25-15.

Senior libero Bethany Roberts led the Lady Waves (14-6, 3-0 district) with eight digs, five aces, two kills and one assist, while senior middle hitter Billie Weick chipped in with four kills, three assists, two aces and one block.

    STOCK UP
Central Hardin coach Mark Perry knew he had a young squad coming into the year, and it showed early. But the youthful Bruins appear to be on the right track after showing remarkable growth the last two weeks. After a 24-21 victory over North Hardin, the Bruins trailed early at Bullitt East only to rally to take a 21-17 lead. Bullitt East came back twice to take a lead in the fourth quarter, but Central Hardin answered each time to pull out a 35-31 win. That’s a sign of a team growing up.

  • PREP VOLLEYBALL NOTEBOOK: Schell...

The area’s longest-tenured prep volleyball coach achieved a major milestone Saturday at the Purples Classic in Bowling Green.

Ben Schell recorded his 100th and 101st victories as the LaRue County Lady Hawks’ coach as they finished fourth in the two-day tournament.

The Lady Hawks beat Fort Campbell, 25-6, 25-11 in their final pool-play match Saturday to give Schell his 100th victory. They advanced to the gold bracket, defeating Owensboro 25-20, 26-24 to earn No. 101 before falling to Bowling Green, 25-11, 25-13.

  • PREP SOCCER NOTEBOOK: LaRue...

Give Marshall Metcalf credit as the senior midfielder for the LaRue County High School boys’ soccer team rarely passes up an opportunity to help his team.

During Saturday night’s 2-0 win over the host team in the Barren County Trojan Classic championship game, Metcalf recorded his school-record 25th assist of the season. His pass helped senior striker Alex Cook match a school record of his own with his 34th goal in 2012.

In 2010, senior Dylan White scored 34 goals in 18 games for the Hawks.

  • GIRLS' PREP GOLF: North...

There are two common entities when it comes to the Girls’ 3rd Region Golf Tournament. They are North Hardin senior Lydia Gumm and the Central Hardin Lady Bruins.

Gumm has won five of the last six region tournaments. Central Hardin’s streak is even longer as the Lady Bruins have claimed the team title eight times in the last nine years. Both will be seeking to add to those totals as the region tournament takes place today at Lindsey Golf Course on Fort Knox.

  • MEN'S COLLEGE SOCCER: ECTC...

After Russ Mott returned to the field, the Elizabethtown Community & Technical College men’s soccer team returned to the win column.

Having missed the Barons’ previous two games – both losses to Saint Catharine College’s reserves – because he had an emergency appendix removal, the former John Hardin High School midfielder scored the tying goal on the road Saturday night as ECTC rallied for a win over the Bellarmine University Knights’ club squad, 3-2.
