  • GIRLS' PREP BASKETBALL:...

Taking the court Saturday afternoon for a road game for the third time in six days – including the second time in less than 24 hours – it would have been understandable if the Elizabethtown Lady Panthers came out sluggish and lackadaisical against the Fort Knox Lady Eagles.

Instead, the Lady Panthers looked quite at home in the Lady Eagles’ temporary one.

No Lady Panther played more than 18 minutes and eight players scored five points or more as Elizabethtown wore down the winless Lady Eagles, 78-20 at Smith Gym.

Junior Aecha Helm scored 18 points and senior Kasey Smallwood posted a double-double as the Central Hardin Lady Bruins gave first-year coach Demond Thomas his first win with a 71-57 victory over 5th Region rival Taylor County on Friday night.

Smallwood had 17 points, 10 rebounds, three assists and three steals as the Lady Bruins improved to 1-1.

“Wow. I’m usually really nervous, but I was a little more calm going into last night’s game,” Thomas said Saturday. “After the game they gave me the game ball, so it was special.”

  • BOYS' PREP BASKETBALL:...

Lack of depth at guard was a concern for North Hardin coach Ron Bevars before the season began. When senior point guard Jermaine Ruttley went down with an injury after the season opener, the Trojans were in dire straits.
Playing without Ruttley for the first time this season, the Trojans showed things aren’t as bad as they seemed a couple days ago. North Hardin built a double digit lead less than 4 minutes into the game and cruised to an 82-55 victory over the Fort Knox Eagles on Friday night at Smith Gym on post in the 17th District opener for both teams.

  • GIRLS' PREP BASKETBALL:...

Raley Johnson and the Meade County Lady Waves didn’t have to wait as long this season to record their first win.

A sophomore guard, Johnson scored a team-high 21 points Friday night and the host Lady Waves hit 12-of-18 foul shots in the final 4:06 to hold on for a 55-50 win over former 5th Region foe LaRue County.

Last season, it took Meade County nine games to finally break into the win column – in late December.

  • GIRLS' PREP BASKETBALL:...

Darian Ditto knows all too well what it’s like to have to watch from the bench, injured and helpless.
After suffering season-ending ACL injuries each of the past two years, the Elizabethtown Lady Panthers senior took one look at teammate Anna Bowling sitting on the bench with an injured back and that’s all she needed to inspire her Friday night.
Ditto scored nine of her 16 points in the fourth quarter to lift Elizabethtown to a 59-45 victory over 17th District rival John Hardin.

  • BOYS' PREP BASKETBALL:...

North Hardin standout senior point guard Jermaine Ruttley has experienced discomfort in his left foot since November, and a trip to the doctor confirmed his worst fear. Ruttley has a stress fracture which will sideline him at least three weeks.

This is the latest setback for the 6-foot-3 Ruttley, who missed all of last season after a promising sophomore campaign. Ruttley’s foot is in a cast and he’ll return to the doctor Dec. 21, when he’ll get it removed. He is hoping to return shortly after.
