    With 24 teams and around 940 total runners flocking to the Hardin County Fairgrounds, Kris Mix and the Central Hardin cross country teams are prepared to host the biggest Central Hardin Invitational in recent memory.

    The girls’ varsity race is at 10 a.m.

    “This is going to be the biggest meet we’ve hosted in a while,” Mix said. “We’re ready. I think we run a meet that is friendly to middle and elementary runners, more so than perhaps the larger meets. And we’re also hosting region this year, so that’s a draw.”

    Alex Higdon and Brandon Shugan made their 17th District debuts Thursday night for John Hardin and both senior Bulldogs were effective.

    Higdon was credited with his team’s first goal before setting up the second, while Shugan helped anchor a lockdown defense as the duo helped lead the visiting Bulldogs to a 2-0 win over the Elizabethtown Panthers.

    Both players missed the Bulldogs’ district opener Sept. 1 in a 4-0 home loss to North Hardin as Higdon had club-team games in Missouri and Shugan was on a church trip.

    North Hardin coach Brent Thompson doesn’t want to make this week of practice any different than previous ones.

    “We tell these kids it’s a new week and we want to get better each week,” Thompson said. “It’s scary being that it’s a rivalry game. Central Hardin is a talented team. We don’t want emotions to take over. We want to take care of business in practice and let it be about us.”
