    Ashley Nikolao continued to torment the North Hardin Trojans as the host Meade County Lady Waves won their third straight game Monday afternoon.

    The sophomore hit a two-run home run and senior Ashlee Sireno tacked on a solo shot as the Lady Waves beat North Hardin for the second time this season, 9-5 at Meade-Olin Park.

    Nikolao’s homer, her fourth in the last four games against the Trojans (5-8), was one of Meade County’s five extra-base hits. The Lady Waves finished with 11 hits.

    What began as a snowball Monday night turned into quite the avalanche for the homestanding LaRue County Lady Hawks.

    After facing the minimum number of Green County hitters through three innings, the Lady Hawks came unglued defensively in the fourth and fifth innings and allowed the ninth-ranked Lady Dragons to emerge with a 6-0 win in a pivotal game between the 18th District rivals.


    The eighth-ranked Central Hardin Bruins picked up two wins Saturday as they topped Grafton (Ohio) Midview and No. 17 Henderson County in a three-team round robin.

    Central Hardin beat Midview, 11-9 and Henderson County, 10-0 in six innings.

    n Senior Derek Westerfield hit a three-run homer in the third and struck out six to propel the Bruins (13-4) past Midview.

    Westerfield (2-2) struck out six, while allowing four earned runs, four hits and three walks.

  • COLLEGE BASKETBALL: A visit from...

    Radcliff resident Tom Moors took a half day off from work Friday just so he could see John Calipari, Joe B. Hall and the Kentucky Wildcats men’s basketball national championship trophy.

    He couldn’t miss having the chance to get a picture taken with the Wildcats’ coach and the trophy or get an autograph from a legend in Hall. It’s the highlight of his year so far.

    Sophomore right-hander Dale Gumm and senior reliever Hunter Martin combined on a perfect game Thursday and John Hardin went 2-0 in the Louisville Seneca Redhawk Rumble.

    John Hardin (9-3) beat Louisville Western, 13-0 in five innings and topped Louisville Doss, 8-3.

    n Gumm struck out nine in four innings as he improved to 4-0, while Martin had one strikeout in the fifth against Western.

    Senior Sam Brashear had two singles and three RBIs, while senior Terrick Jaquess had two singles and an RBI.

  • COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Calipari,...

    A Friday afternoon appearance in Elizabethtown is among many stops the next three days for University of Kentucky men’s basketball coach and the Wildcats’ eighth NCAA Tournament championship trophy as part of the UK Men’s Basketball National Championship Trophy Tour.

    Calipari made the announcement on Twitter on Tuesday night and posted more details on his official website, CoachCal.com, on Wednesday.


    Junior Cole Hughes threw a two-hitter to lead the LaRue County Hawks to a 3-1 win over host Fort Walton Beach (Fla.) on Wednesday in the Florida Beach Bash.

    Hughes (4-0) struck out eight while allowing one unearned run, two walks and two singles.

    Senior Helena Hardin hit a grand slam to lift the host Meade County Lady Waves past 11th District rival Breckinridge County on Tuesday, 12-2 in five innings.

    Hardin’s slam came in the fourth inning, when the 18th-ranked Lady Waves (6-7 overall, 1-0 district) blew the game open with eight runs.

    Senior Ashlee Sireno went 2-for-3 with a double, while sophomore Ashley Nikolao was 2-for-3 with three stolen bases and two RBIs. Junior Megan Aebersold went 3-for-3 with a double and one RBI.


    Heart can carry an athlete a long way.

    But when coupled with drive, it puts a player above and beyond others.
