    John Hardin High School softball coach Corey Yates resigned Thursday afternoon after 2 1/2 years with the program.

    Yates, who took over for Andrew Hundley before the 2010 season, was 35-47 as John Hardin's head coach. The Lady Bulldogs won 17 games in 2010 and 15 in 2011, but have struggled so far this season as they've gone 3-14.

    John Hardin's district game with No. 18 Central Hardin was canceled Thursday afternoon. No makeup date has been announced.

    Former Central Hardin High School golf standout KARISA AKIN, a Middle Tennessee State University senior, tied for 15th Wednesday in the 55-player Sun Belt Conference women’s golf tournament at the 6,264-yard, par-72 Robert Trent Jones golf course at the Shoals in Muscle Shoals, Ala.

    Akin posted consecutive rounds of 75, 80 and 73 to finish with 54-hole total of 228 to help the Blue Raiders finish second out of 11 teams. Akin’s scorecard consisted of 39 pars, 12 bogeys, two birdies and one double bogey.

    Weight lifting hasn’t yet caught on in the Bluegrass, but it’s a growing sport at Fort Knox High School.

    Two Fort Knox athletes won national championships March 30 in the Natural Athlete Strength Association’s High School Nationals in Oklahoma City.

    Senior Josh Kleber won his weight class and was named the meet’s Outstanding Male Lifter, while junior Demyja Holmes won two events and placed second in another en route to being named the meet’s Outstanding Female Lifter.

Freshman Javier Echevarria had two singles, two runs and three RBIs, and junior Jamaal Wilson went 2-for-2 with three runs and two RBIs for the Trojans (13-5 overall, 3-2 district).
