    Cortney Gandy and Megan Leffler admitted they were a little surprised to see they were seeded fifth in the girls’ doubles bracket of the 5th Region Tennis Tournament — after all, they had only been playing together for a week.

    Misfortune and injuries broke up Gandy and Leffler’s respective doubles teams, thrusting the seniors together just days before the start of this week’s tournament and creating a darkhorse to claim a region championship.

    Toward the end of her final season in the Central Hardin softball program, senior center fielder Kevena Larkins is finally getting into a comfort zone.

    Early in the year, Larkins was in an offensive experiment mode. She tried slapping and being a stand-up hitter from both sides of the plate, but to no avail. Being a slap hitter would allow Larkins to use her outstanding speed and athleticism to get on first base, but batting left-handed could fluster pitchers.
