    First, Watts took advantage of Transylvania University men’s golf team member Stevie Montgomery’s hospitality as the fellow senior allowed him to spend the night nearby while the duo competed this weekend in the annual Men’s Invitational at Elizabethtown Country Club.

    The hospitality was nice, sure, but Watts had something else in store Sunday for his buddy – taking his title.

    Champions were crowned in nine divisions Saturday during the Elizabethtown Tennis Commission’s annual youth singles tournament at University Drive Park.

    *** Elizabethtown’s Keegan Christensen beat Elizabethtown’s Jason Towell for the title in the two-player boys’ 10 division.

    *** Elizabethtown’s Omar Qurram beat Elizabethtown’s Suleman Khan for the title in the four-player boys’ 12 division.

  • MEN'S GOLF: Transylvania...

    The annual Men’s Invitational at Elizabethtown Country Club is not a college-only tournament, but the Transylvania University Pioneers are well represented on the championship flight’s leaderboard entering today’s 18-hole final round of the 35-player tournament.

    The Pioneers’ senior-to-be tandem of Harry Watts and Stephen Montgomery are 1-2. Watts, a former Woodford County High School standout, has a three-stroke lead at 76. Montgomery, the defending Men’s Invitational champion and a former John Hardin standout, shot a 79.

    For five members – Daniel Kaiser, Garrett Ledford, Brady Smith, Bo Wilson and Andrew Zabel – of this year’s senior class, they’ll recall the 2012 baseball season, the year a special team made Meade County history in more ways than one.

    The Green Wave reached the state semifinals in their first appearance in the Kentucky National Insurance/KHSAA State Baseball Tournament before falling to Henderson County, 10-6 at Whitaker Bank Ballpark.

    When Central Hardin coach Todd Thompson put him on the mound for the first time last season, Drew Harrington wasn’t sure he’d like pitching.

    As a sophomore, Harrington was the Bruins’ No. 3 pitcher behind seniors Dylan Shoffner and Austin Walters. Harrington went 5-0 with a 2.83 ERA and closed out wins over Owensboro Apollo and Louisville St. Xavier in the state tournament.
