  • BOYS' PREP BASKETBALL...

John Hardin senior point guard Brandon Price has heard the knocks on him because of lack of height his entire life. Every step along the way people doubted him.

Even opposing high school coaches who had seen first-hand the damage he could do fueled the notion. As one coach told me, “He’s a great high school point guard.” Notice he said high school, implying Price wouldn’t be able to make it at the next level.

  • PREP BASEBALL: No. 1 Central...

The Central Hardin Bruins hadn’t had many scoring chances Friday night, so when an opportunity presented itself in the bottom of the seventh inning, they decided to take a gamble.

Using the bat of junior pinch-hitter Isaac VanMeter and the speed of freshman Justin Rouse, the top-ranked Bruins made the move pay off as they cashed in with a 1-0 victory over the second-ranked Louisville St. Xavier Tigers in a battle fitting of the state’s two best teams.

  • PREP BASEBALL ROUNDUP:...

Elizabethtown lost two games over the weekend, dropping a 7-2 decision to Christian Academy-Louisville on Friday and a 5-2 defeat to Woodford County on Saturday. The setbacks snapped a five-game winning streak.

    * Visiting Christian Academy-Louisville (15-13) didn’t score after the first inning, but it didn’t matter as it won for the fifth time in seven games and the host Panthers (19-8) suffered consecutive losses for the first time since April 12.

  • PREP TENNIS: Seeds hold true at...

For many, the first round of the 5th Region Tennis Tournament is all about surviving and advancing.

Doing so with a clean bill of health is also highly encouraged.

“I told the guys, ‘If you’re up a bit, don’t go diving for a ball and break your leg,’” said LaRue County boys’ coach Roger Pierce. “’Because if you’re really up, hopefully you’ll get to play Monday.’”

  • PREP BASEBALL-SOFTBALL ROUNDUP:...

Senior Cannon Pender and junior Preston Patterson combined for two doubles, two singles and seven RBIs as the visiting Elizabethtown Panthers cruised to a 14-1 five-inning victory over 17th District rival Fort Knox on Thursday.

Elizabethtown (19-6, 6-2 district), which had 13 hits, broke the game open with nine runs in the second inning. Freshman Hunter Sullivan tripled, while sophomores Zeke Pinkham and Cody Bridges each had two singles.

Senior Garrett Morgan struck out five in four innings to improve to 4-0. He allowed three hits.

  • PREP TENNIS: Region tourney set...

When John Hardin traveled to Marion County for a match March 25, a highly anticipated singles duel was on the horizon.

    Except it never happened.

On the way to the meet, John Hardin junior Tyler Edlin expected to square off against Marion County star sophomore Alex Spalding.

Instead, Spalding played doubles that day and Edlin followed suit, putting the showdown on hold.

That matchup may be just around the corner.

  • PREP BASEBALL: Central gets bats...

Central Hardin coach Todd Thompson realizes the high school baseball season is long and it can be a grind at times. Players will struggle batting from time to time. What he doesn’t want is his players stressing or pressing about it.

That was the message Thompson gave the team after back-to-back losses in last weekend’s Louisville Invitational Tournament. The Bruins weren’t productive at the plate, scoring only five runs and getting 14 hits.

  • PREP SOFTBALL: North Hardin...

North Hardin star sophomore pitcher Bailey Blair admitted she didn’t have her best stuff Thursday night, while veteran coach Donnie Baker said neither did the rest of the Trojans.

But for the second straight 17th District game, North Hardin did enough to keep itself in contention for the district’s regular-season title. Overcoming four errors, North Hardin held on for a 5-4 road win over the surprisingly solid Elizabethtown Lady Panthers.
