Heart can carry an athlete a long way.

But when coupled with drive, it puts a player above and beyond others.

  • GIRLS' ALL-AREA BASKETBALL...

Maybe there’s a reason why Ivy Brown was such a runaway winner for The News-Enterprise/Coaches Area Girls’ Sophomore of the Year honor.

  • BOYS' ALL-AREA BASKETBALL:...

Longtime Elizabethtown Panthers coach James Haire likes having veterans on the floor. However, that philosophy was drastically swayed in the 2010-11 season with the emergence of freshman guards Nic McDonald and Bryce Byrd.

The young duo took their lumps, but they matured enough that as sophomores in 2011-12, they helped lead the Panthers to the 17th District’s regular-season championship.

  • BOYS' ALL-AREA BASKETBALL:...

If there is one player on the John Hardin boys’ basketball team who seems to embody the Bulldogs’ mascot, it’s guard Brandon Price.

At 5-foot-7 and 140 pounds, the junior isn’t going to impose his will physically on many opposing players. He instead gets by with heart, practice, willpower and determination.

The North Hardin Trojans had a big day at the plate Monday as they won their third straight.

Senior Andrew Boyles hit two home runs and the visiting Trojans had nine extra-base hits en route to an 18-7 five-inning win over 5th Region rival Campbellsville.

  • PREP BASEBALL/PREP SOFTBALL...

The 13th-ranked North Laurel Lady Jaguars swept the North Hardin Trojans and the LaRue County Lady Hawks on Sunday during the opening day of the annual Florida Beach Bash in Fort Walton.

North Laurel notched a 4-0 decision against North Hardin before earning a 1-0 win against LaRue County. No. 6 Louisville Assumption was originally supposed to play LaRue County, but Assumption played Saturday evening in the prestigious 50-team Bob Jones Classic in Huntsville, Ala., and didn’t make it to the beach in time to play the Lady Hawks.

  • BOYS' PREP TRACK: Five gold...

Five gold medals spurred the North Hardin Trojans to victory in their own invitational Saturday at the Jeter-McKinney Track Complex.

Senior Kirk Oxendine won the 400-meter dash and the Trojans swept all four relays as they won the 18-team North Hardin Invitational over Louisville St. Xavier. North Hardin had 123 points to St. Xavier’s 98.5.

  • PREP SOFTBALL ROUNDUP:...

The host Elizabethtown Lady Panthers scored 13 runs in the first two innings, totaled 15 hits and earned a 15-0 three-inning victory Friday over 17th District rival Fort Knox. The win snapped Elizabethtown’s four-game losing skid and was its first victory in district play this season.

  • PREP BASEBALL ROUNDUP:...

The eighth-ranked Central Hardin Bruins rebounded from a loss to the state’s No. 1 team Friday with a dominant pitching performance from junior Drew Harrington on Saturday afternoon.
