A veteran journalist and author will conduct a book signing today of his account of a botched murder for hire in the 1970s.

Gary West, formerly of Elizabethtown, will be signing copies of his book, “Murder on Youngers Creek Road,” beginning at 9 a.m. today at Fresh coffee shop on North Third Street in Bardstown.

The book details a murder for hire scheme that targeted the former owner of the Ford dealership in Elizabethtown, Dusty Rhodes. A bomb planted in his horse barn at his farm on Youngers Road was intended to kill him, but instead killed his wife, Peggy, in January 1975.

The book “is a true story of a murder-for-hire gone wrong that involves a well-known automobile dealer, two hit men hired to kill him and a pair of high-profile business partners,” West said.

Now in its second printing, this is West’s 17th published book. It is available in hard cover at acclaimpress.com and Amazon for $24.95.
