Black bear hit by car, killed in Meade County

After a driver hit and killed a black bear Wednesday night on U.S. 31W, it was photographed and loaded up for state wildlife officials.

A black bear weighing about 400 pounds was hit and killed when struck by a car Wednesday night near Fort Knox.

Muldraugh Assistant Fire Chief Anthony Lee said a woman driving a car hit the bear while going northbound on U.S. 31W in Meade County.

The driver had no injuries and some damage to her car. The bear was then removed and turned over to the Department of Kentucky Fish and Wildlife.

Lee said there have been other bear sightings in the area and that the population of bears have increased in the state.

He said people should visit the Fish and Wildlife’s website at fw.ky.gov/Wildlife/Pages/Black-Bears.aspx, which contains points on how to deal with bears. Overall, he said those who end up encountering a bear to avoid any interaction with them.

“Just let them be, let them do what they need to do,” Lee said. “They’re just as scared as you are.”
