The 2nd District Republic Committee reached a decision Wednesday that the Hardin County Republican Committee’s vote to censure Sen. Mitch McConnell was out of order.
Critical of a perceived threat to Second Amendment gun ownership rights, Hardin County Republican Party members approved a censure resolution reprimanding U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell and calling for his resignation earlier this month.
The 2nd District Republican Committee is made up of Timothy Gilliam, Samara Heavrin, Aaron Witten, Osei Thomas and James Victery.
According to the decision, because McConnell is not a resident of Hardin County and is ineligible to be a member of the Hardin County Republican Committee, disciplinary measures aren’t applicable to him as a nonmember.
“Senator McConnell resides in Jefferson County and thus the only county committee he would be eligible to serve on would be with the Jefferson County Republican Party,” the decision said.
The censure resolution took issue with McConnell’s vote in support of the bipartisan Safer Communities Act of 2022. It says the law is an unconstitutional gun control measure and says the senator violated his oath of office when he voted in favor.
It went on to say that McConnell, one of 15 Republicans to vote for the bill, “failed in his duty to uphold the Republican platform and to represent his constituents as well as all Republicans” and it called for his resignation as well as withdraws the county GOP’s future support.
This Republican rift reaches beyond Hardin County, which was the 20th such GOP county committee to pass a resolution condemning the senator, who has served 37 years and has been the GOP Senate leader since 2006.
