The driver of a 2008 Chevrolet Impala was serious injured Monday afternoon when his car left the roadway and struck a Woodland Drive bridge pillar on the U.S. 31W Bypass, Elizabethtown police said.

The Impala was heading north on the Bypass near U.S. 31W when it struck the pillar, according to Elizabethtown Police Department spokesman Chris Denham,

The driver, who was the lone occupant, was airlifted with critical and potentially life-threatening injuries, police said.

The reason the car hit the pillar is unknown. The collision, which happened around 12:40 p.m., remains under investigation. EPD did not release the name injured driver.
